Down to the #1 and #2 seeds. Instead of a hard deadline, I'll say that the poll will close after a week of non-voting. |

=2: SUPER SMASH BROTHERS MELEE A very close competition! SSBM smashes SMB3 on every level in terms of technical prowess... but we are to find out which the best GAME, not best movie! As such... on to the comparison! SMB3 goes first, "nostalgia" force me to. SMB3 offers an incredibly long and engaging adventure made of 8 worlds of pure platforming goodness. It offers some of the best GFX the NES has to offer and is on the edge of 8-bits technology. The levels are extremely well-designed and are neither too long or too short. They're just right. There's a massive quantity of levels and tons of variations too! Each world offer a new theme, guaranteeing that everyone will have his cup of tea in the game!... and if you don't like a world? No problem! The game is packed full of secret areas... and items! Tanooki Suit, Hammer Bros suit, hammer... you name it, it got it! There's even hidden levels such as the ghost ships! There's also the flute in case you're not interested at clearing some of the game's less interesting or original worlds and want to skip to more interesting levels... or just want to reach the end boss early. However, the bad starts here. This is a pre-N64 Mario game and as such, offer a low difficulty level. The bosses are not very tricky, the levels offer not that many challenges, and only world 8 and the later airship stages offer a real challenge. The final boss was also labelled as one of the most disappointing Mario final bosses ever... which is harsh in my opinion since he's challenging but yes, with the secret items, he's a piece of cake. SMB3 has a better multiplayer mode than SMB1... in fact, it's nice but nowhere near today's games. You can play the adventure mode in cooperation (bah! Swapping the controller in a single-player game would be the same actually)... or you can play the REAL multiplayer experience: the battle mode! It's actually a copy of Mario Bros (not SMB1)!... and there's even special mini-games such as one with boxes, a race for coins, and a pipe throwing tons of stuff! Really, really fun actually. All in all, if you ignore the low difficulty, this is truly worthy of being called the best game ever with a long, engaging single-player adventure and a surprisingly fun and addictive multiplayer "battle" mode. Now... on to SSBM! SSBM is a fighting game and focus more on the multiplayer part... but unlike the first game, it got a single-player mode!... and not only does it got one, but it's one truly excellent one! Classic is a carbon copy of the first game's single-player mode! It even got the same order for each stages and the same old final boss!... however, there are twists! First, we finally get random opponents and thus, a LOT less repetition and a harder final boss should you play on the harder difficulties and fulfill some conditions. But the meat of the single-player mode is in it's two main modes: Adventure and Event Match. Adventure is a old school player's dream come true: travel trought each of the video game universes, hunting down Evil until you finally face the most dreaded villain of all times in a showdown of epic proportions on the Final Destination, the link between the video game universe and the real world! For a fighting game, Adventure mode is long and feature a lot of variety, alterning skillfully between melees and platforming phases. Just like Classic mode, you get a bonus if you're on the harder modes and fulfill some conditions... exept that it's even better here. Unstead of a new final boss, you get the same final boss... but he now have a second form AND you get a (slightly) better ending for defeating this new boss! Event Match is very different... but just as deep and entertraining! You have, like, 51 missions to complete. The missions are diverses and original, ranging from protecting Peach from a giant Bowser, to separating the Nana from Popo, including also fighting 128 miniature Marios and KOing a foe only when he's in a specific form. Those missions offer a nice break from the main adventure. There's also a Stadium mode where you can play mini-games and take on the infamous Fighting Polygons (now evolved into Fighting Wireframes) in a variety of settings. In the multiplayer department, this is a dream come true. Modes in which victory is now based on coins and points were added and several new ways of playing are added such as a melee where all characters are giant, tiny, invisible, or even where everyone has HPs, like in other fighting games! Multiplayer is where the game shines... and the combination of a deep, challenging single-player experience and probably the best multiplayer mode ever makes for some truly terrific gameplay! And now... do you think this is too much? That I spent too much time just on the modes? I'm NOT over yet! SSBM is THE game that has the most secrets, EVER! Secret characters, secret arenas, new single-players modes, new events, new multiplayer options, new adventure mode bosses... it is unbelievable how much there is to unlock!... and it's not Mario Party style where you start with nothing and must unlock everything! On the opposite! You start with enough to make the game truly fine as it is... and you obtain so much stuff that in the end, you'll barely believe how many options this game got! So... SSBM is perfect, right? WRONG! While the characters are almost Starcraft-level balanced... it doesn't keep some characters from having an awfully steep learning curve (Pichu, Bowser, Peach...) and there is a finite number of characters and arenas, of course. The fact that alternate musics comes out randomly when selecting a stage unstead of choosing specifically is just a tiny bit annoying too. The main adventure, altought long for a fighting game, is still a bit too short. There's a definite lack of a story (altought you can figure one out trought the cutscenes) which brings down the score a bit. Also... the harder modes are like, REALLY hard and sometimes, the odds are stacked a tad bit too much against the player (later missions in Event Match, the Pokemon stage and later boss fights in Adventure's harder modes), and there's the fact that, face it, no matter how good it is, you'll get sick of it eventually. All in all, SSBM is just like SMB3, a good candidate to be the best game of all times... but there can only be a single best game of all times. Now to the results... The winner is... SSBM!!! Despite it's short adventure, it's multiplayer and extra single-player modes compensate and the high difficulty of the harder modes means that altought there are only a few levels, you will NOT breeze trought them! All in all, SSBM wins as a single-player game becease of it's difficulty and as a multiplayer game for obvious reasons. SMB3 lovers... do not throw tomatoes at me however! SMB3 is one heck of a game... it got a long and varied single-player adventure and a battle mode that is too often overlooked... and as such, this was a very close match. With that said... have a nice day and enjoy your games, folks! |

SMB3 fo sho. I have fond memories of the 80's movie The Wizard and SMB3. HE TOUCHED MY BREAST! Anyway, Melee is great indeed, but SMB3 has been played by many more people than Melee, not just because of it's age, but because of it's gameplay type. I can get my mom to play SMB3 with me for hours, but she won't touch Melee, or any fighting game for that matter. |

Super Smash Bros. Melee Yes, SMB3 is great, but I like to have something that is good single player and multi. While SMB3 had some good multiplayer, SSBM had more options with playing and is never really the same battle twice. Plus, it is a fighting game with more flair. Close match, but I choose SSBM. |

OFF: Huh? The discussion thread was removed?... anyway, my opinion is basically the same as RT-55J's exept that I'll say it in a more polite and comprehensive way. I'm rather saddened to say that SMB3 is winning... but not becease it's not a good game. Rather, I feel it that we should choose which is the best GAME. There's people here that said that SMB3 is the best game ever becease it was featured in a movie... WTF?!? Then, there's people that vote SMB3 for the impact it had on video games... *COUGHI* The question here is: Which game is the BEST, not which game had the most impact! Else, Pong would 0wn3d SMB3 becease that's it the first video game. Anyway... I don't mind SMB3 winning becease that, frankly, it really is a magnificient game! Anyway, to all "nostalgiacs"... replay BOTH SSBM and SMB3 before voting and then vote according to the experiences you just had, not according to your memories. In short, vote according to the CURRENT fun factor of the game. After all, how can you say SMB3 is the best game ever if you can no longer enjoy it or doesn't enjoy it as much as newer games? Originally posted by Zerodius Wrong. I mentioned that I enjoyed the fact that it was in a movie, not that it should win BECAUSE it was in a movie. Nowhere in my post did I say it was the best game ever because it was in a movie. I enjoy platforming games a bit more than fighting game for various reasons. My choosing SMB3 over Melee stems from my enjoyment of sidescrolling type platform games like SMB3. Part of nostolgia is the feelings you get when playing a game you enjoyed. I played both and I have more nostolgia for SMB3. They are both games, and both give me happy memories playing them, but I had a better time playing SMB3 when it came out than I did with Melee. Originally posted by Zerodius I enjoyed SMB3 because I feel it's a superior GAME. I look past the shiny new graphics and sounds and bam-zow special effects, and see that I did and still do have more fun playing it. |

I guess people forgot about "Opinions"? Seriously, I'm seeing a lot of people pick SSBM, when I'd choose SMB3, but I'm not going to ring their neck for it. If they enjoyed it more than SMB3, then great for them. Not that big of a deal if you ask me. Edit: Ugh, sorry for the off-topic post. (edited by Xeomega on 06-27-05 10:05 PM) |
