| This phrase and the oft-accompanying image suggest that the primary objective of the internet is to allow people to goof off and act in ways which would be intolerable in public, and that any serious discussion is inherently absurd and has no place anywhere on the web. I believe this is a fallacy, and am interested to see if anyone agrees. The express purpose of the internet is communication. It is true that acting obnoxious is a type of communication, but not to the exclusion of all other types, such as serious debate and personal dialogue. "OMG DRAMA!" This implies the same thing; that serious discussion has no place on the internet, and that only fools would dare engage in such a thing. I personally hold no respect for those who would attest to such ideas. I'm curious to see who here agrees and disagrees. Please, discuss. |

Well in real life I wouldn't force people to read purple text on a black background.  Lucky for me I have a habit of highlighting everything I read online. But either way, I would say I act much the same as I do in real life. If I don't know a community well, I'm reserved. The longer I've been around, the more open and wacky I'm willing to be, but it depends on the environment certainly. Like many things, you get what you want out of the internet. if you're there for business, you'll find business, if you're there for pleasure, you'll find it. |

| I highlight everything I read too. Any way, I don't think there's an issue here or anything, because anything serious, like debate, usually is denoted as such. I mean, this is called "World Affairs/Debate Forum" so, it is kind of obvious what you should be talking about. Now, sometimes things may get out of hand, but this is likely because the forum is surrounded by a bunch of nonsense. However, there are debate only forums that ban nonsense people, so I guess if anyone wanted to be serious they could go to places like that. This is just like in Real Life | |||

Internet is a way to communicate. Thought, due to it's... rather anymouse nature, people dare to do stuff they wouldn't normally do.  It's up to the people themself how to use a big network like Internet. One thing is sure, and that's the society have been changing and is still transforming becuse of the internet. And Internet brings people all over the world together, for twenty years ago it was quite rare for anyone here to have contact with people at the other side of the atlantic every day. |
