| I'm having a real bad problem with xp, Over the past week I had to reinstall XP last week because windows locked me out of my own system. I had rebooted into safe mode to check for a hardware problem, plus before that problem occured I had bought a 3 month old 20 gig hard drive from a friend of mine at college he didn't tell me that the disk lock up's every once in a while. When the hard drive try's to read a sector on the hard drive and when it does it will do this it goes: tick, tick, rick, brack! brack! its nothing dangerously loud.... whens it loading heavy files or programs that are over the size of 125MB it act's like its going to have PC heart attack......... But anyway, every time I restart my PC and press F8 to Log into safe mode I get the BSOD ( which means Blue Screen of death) I have reinstalled XP 4 times over that past 2 months either due to the system locking me out or file corruption with the OS.... each time windows installs, safe mode is working perfectly but when I put my BU files and programs on it after a week or so safe mode is once again F***** up.......! also my old 10 gig has the same problem plus I can't use it now because it is slow and can barely handle the stress of my work, examples: ROM hacking, college work. internet playing minor space hogging games, website development minor video editing and word processing. after all that I just named that is on my 10 gig HD I have 4.92gigs left. since I have 20 gig I can do alot more now if its possible..... Can anyone give me a clue on how to manually fixed this inside of windows or lead me to a site with this exact same problem and solutin ? MadMikeXP P.S. also keep in mind that I can't buy a new hard drive just yet I have to scrounge up at least 80 dollars just for 40gig HD also my system is completely maxed out.... which means I can't upgrade it aymore..... |

| i suggest you slowly reinstall your stuff...only install it when you need it instead of just simply restoring the entire system because something is obviously wrong when something gets installed. Virgin WinXP OS installations almost never crash. Therefore, that is something I suggest you try doing. Also, are you installing SP2? maybe you can only install SP1 and that might help. Also, i'm guessing that you install WinXP without formatting? if so, then maybe this is a good time to do a format because having a clean drive helps as well after a fresh installation. |

| It definetly sounds like you have a major issue that will only be fixed by formatting and reinstalling Windows. You probably have several viruses/trojans/backdoors/worms or whatever. And I really would love to know who's ripping you off for a hard drive. 10 seconds of searching found me a 40gb for 52.99 with shipping, and an 80gb for 56.99 with shipping. I even found a 160gb for 82.99 with shipping. And all 3 are from the only site I ever order PC stuff from anymore, newegg.com. |

| Thanks neotransotaku and Yiffy Kitten for the help, I think it has been a real long time since I have did a *real* clean install of XP. usually I just get XP to reformat my HD and just go on to install XP.... should I use W98 to format it or IBM hard drive tools to format it ? also should I level zero it to make it fully clean. last night NAV 2005 didn't find nothing at all. neotransokatu when I installed service pack 2 I did notice xp having trouble with small to medium size corruption in the windows folder environment so maybe I should leave service pack 2 alone until microfalse get's there act together. When I get the chance I reformat my pc and get it ready for a fresh install. thanks for the help MadMikeXP |

| If you use the utility in WinXP's installer then it formats the drive perfectly fine. I just hope you use NTFS and NOT FAT32, because FAT32 is far more susceptible to corruption. If you format with Win98, you can only format in FAT32, which I suggest you NOT do. I have WinXP Service Pack 2 installed, and I don't have any problems with my system. Also, just because an AV program doesn't find anything doesn't mean it isn't infected or corrupted somewhere. Especially if you haven't updated it recently. Also, a lot of spyware programs and viruses prevent AV and Anti-Spyware programs from working properly. Just FYI. |
