According to various Local TV Stations, N-TV, Spiegel.de and SBB itself, all Trains in Switzerland stand still. Because of a Power Shortage on the national Railway lines, since 17:45 GMT+1, all trains stand still, about 100'000 passengers wait in Z |

Wow, that sucks. Hope everyone doesn't get home too late. Is traveling by train more popular then other methods of transportation in Switzerland? | |||

not really, about 20% travel by train (more miles per head in switzerland than japan for railways), and less than 50% by car, rest is going by bus, bicycle or other means. So it's the second most choosen way to travel. Over 150'000 people had to wait to get home. (From 7 Millions, thats about PI-1 % (2.14%) of all Swiss citiciens. As of 22:00 GMT+1, all trains are running again, but not by shedule. Hey Nick what do ya know. I was in Wisconsin too. The blackout was pretty weird. I remember sitting in the lounge area with the TV and my computer on, they were focused on this for like hours and hours. Probably because they thought it was a terrorist. But nontheless this prolly doesnt equal what happend to the eastcoast. Edit: Why were you in Wisconsin Nick? (edited by Randy53215 on 06-22-05 06:37 PM) (edited by Randy53215 on 06-22-05 06:37 PM) |

My friends and I were driving home from a small Indian casino in northern Minnesota, right on the Canadian border, when my friend wrecked the car. We had to stay the night in a hotel, and then take a Greyhound bus back to Cleveland. 20 hours! 20 hours! Fuck you, Greyhound! Edit: Even after the unexpected expense of an extra night in a hotel and some extra meals, I came home with $10 more than I left. But then I had to pay my friend back for the bus ticket. If it weren't for the crash, I would have profited from that trip! (edited by NSNick on 06-22-05 06:44 PM) |

Meh, all that matters is that you had fun. Wisconsin has a lot of Casino's too. Greyhound blows balls for long trips.XD So is the power back up fully yet? |

Have there been any injuries or deaths declared from this thing yet? If not, that's one thing to be grateful for, at least. I remember the big East Coast Blackout. I was in upstate New York at the time in an area that was unaffected by it, but I was coming home in a couple days and was unsure if the power would be on when I got back. |

Sounds a lot like our subway system here the past few days. Montreal's always been known to have an efficient, reliable metro, but... the last few days have been a joke, with one whole line shut down for hours on Monday and service interruptions today. The problem? The electrical wiring hasn't been replaced since the system first opened. Oh boy. |

How long has power been out? It can't possibly be as bad as you are describing it though. It's warm enough where you don't really have to worry about being cold, although if it gets too hot, no AC or fans or of-the-like. The northeast blackout of 03 was insane in the way that it just took out power for that many people. But I also have a story... April, 2001, on a somewhat cold night, Godzilla was on NBC. It had been raining pretty heavily during the course of the night. It was nearing 10 pm local time when all of a sudden *bzzt*..............the power went out. It didn't really seem that bad at first, and since it was 10 pm, couldn't tell the extent of the outage. So, after a good nights sleep, and without the aid of my alarm clock, managed to wake up at 6 am the next morning. Oh man, it was a sight that needed a few cameras and a shitload of film. Every tree, every power line, everything was covered in a layer of ice that was easily an inch thick. The view was breath-taking, the inner city of Duluth wasn't affected as much, simply because there were more buildings than other things. But, the entire surrounding area of about 15 miles was brought to a screeching halt for about 5 or 6 days easily. There weren't any local news casts for 2 days, and many people didn't get power back for almost 2 weeks. Also, it was a cold winter, and spring wasn't any warmer. The night of the storm and the following day, you had to have a gas stove or be very very cold. Granted, my experience probably wasn't as wide-scale as yours. Let's just hope that people use their heads in this matter. < |
