I was just thinking it'd be nice to have some sort of video editor. The only one I have (well, had) is Windows Movie Maker which sucked so bad (and of course crashed randomly) I wiped every trace of it from the hard drive. Here's what I'm looking for:

  • Speed - not important but needs to be at least functional on an old crappy computer, working with videos up to around 250MB or 30 minutes.
  • Compatibility - as many supported formats as possible, particularly MKV, AVI and MPG. Output-wise just AVI and maybe MPG is fine.
  • Stability - random crashes was the worst thing about WMM.
  • Power - needs to be able to insert, remove and re-arrange clips, scroll through a frame at a time and import/export still images. WMM's interface was pretty good for this, actually. Some special effects would be nice too, especially speed changed and reversing clips. Audio isn't particularly important but being able to import an MP3 to use as an audio track would be good.

I'm looking particularly at free stuff but I'm open to more expensive suggestions, nothing ridiculous though. (Only one I know of, free or not, is VirtualDub, and unless there's a whole lot of plugins somewhere it's pretty limited.)

Hey hyper hacker, if your looking for video editor and if you have a DVD burner for burning big movie files over 700 MB I would suggest that you try these 2: Nero 6 with Nero vision Express 3 not (Nero burniong rom) when I got my dvd burner last year for christmas it came with it. however the retail price for that cost at least 99.99 or the download is 79.99 with serial number. also if you deal with small mini clips or like to record from the screen and edit this is also uesful. (Camtasia studio). http://www.techsmith.com/

I'm just trying to help and give out some good tips.

you can do all your "power" things with virtualdub HH, it's just a little tedious because you have to create clips for each part you want to save/or rearrange

Well apparently I can't, because all VD does when I open it is give me an error message:
The procedure entry point _CorConvertImage@8 could not be located in the dynamic link library corona.dll.
I know what that means, but hell if I know how to fix it.

I used some version of VirtualDubMod you posted a while back, might not be the newest version but it worked before.

And I have no idea what that is.

hmm...to get MKV support, you need VirtualDubMod...but for rearranging clips, then normal virtualdub is sufficient

here is the link to the "stable" version: VirtualDub 1.5.10
