I would have made this a sticky thread, but nobody seems to read them anymore. The number of old threads being bumped has been unacceptably high as of late. Threads from LAST OCTOBER are somehow finding their way back to page 1, and it's cluttering up the thread listing, pushing recent (and more important) threads out of view. Unless you're the original creator of the thread and have something major to add (i.e. screenshots of a hack or program in progress), DO NOT POST IN THREADS THAT ARE MORE THAN TWO WEEKS OLD. In a forum as active as this one, if a thread hasn't had a post in more than a week, consider it as good as dead. There has also been a noticeable increase in questions that could easily (sometimes VERY easily) be answered simply by reading Lunar Magic's help file, or the sticky threads at the top of the forum. Please, if you're new here, take the time to read through and absorb these valuable resources. We didn't spend the time writing them just to have them gather dust and occupy screen space. Thank you. |

Invision Power Boards have the option in the admin CP to automatically delete threads older than a certain number of days. Does ACMLM's board have this option? EDIT: Big Boards said that this board is made out of custom software designed by Acmlm. If this feature isn't implemented perhaps Acmlm could make it. (edited by mvent2 on 06-20-05 02:45 AM) |

Automatically deleting threads in a ROM hacking forum is a very bad idea. Important information could be lost forever (like when the overclocked.org board crashed). IIRC, an automatic thread-closing system was being discussed a while ago. I'm not entirely sure what happened with that... |

This could be suggested in the staff forum(s), since this is a point affecting staff only (It would be weird if I suggested that, as a regular user). If you already can close several threads in a similar way like the ModControlPanel in phpBBs using checkboxes and hitting a button below, you could close all older threads in couple of seconds locking entire pages of threads. ROM hackers wanting to revive their old threads could PM you about that - or simply leave all threads having offset- and other data open And I also don't like deleting, I was a moderator in a bigger forum for a longer time but never trashed threads if they were not senseless (RPG Maker content, maybe people got active again and wanted to revive their old projects but didn't want to start a new thread) but only closed them. And, BMF, the obvious questions - you cannot avoid them. You may paint thread title pink (if it was possible) with blink, marquee tags and font size 10, even then there will be these questions from time to time. Otherwise moderators would not be needed in forums |

I'm not sure if I like auto-locking threads. It's better if there was a warning, like "This thread is more than three weeks old. Posting in it is not recommended. Are you really sure that you want to post in it? Yes/No".

Perhaps the first visit to this board should send you to the newbie help page and afterwards a cookie will make it so that you'll just go to the thread list afterwards. That way you can't possibly miss the newbie thread. (edited by DisruptiveIdiot on 06-20-05 07:26 AM) |

This might also be a good idea: If someone bumps a lot, the admins removes the user's ability to post in threads older than two or three weeks. "Sorry. You're not allowed to post in this thread since it's too old." |

I hope i have not done that. Or at least i try not to, that is why try to avoide even reading old threads, i get the urge to reply to them. Anyhow, i get the feeling that the ones that keep doing this, may be very young, and when i was younger i was pretty hard headed, actualy im still pretty hard headed, just ask peter_ac, i kept asking him question about stuff in his threads rather then commenting on what the thread was about. Sorry about that pete. Anyhow, i do think it is a better idea to have a thread automaicly closed rather then deleted all togethor. I rememer when something happen to the forum last time, if an automatic deleting had been inplace befor all that had happen, we would not have much right now. |

If you absolutely MUST continue an old conversation, create a new thread with all the pertinent info and a link to the old thread. There are certain situations where a bump would be the better option, of course. If you think this is the case, run it by one of us moderators before doing it.

Well said, BMF. Personally, I think that closing, but not deleting very old threads is a good idea, because that could stop year-old bumps. Unfortunately, there will always be someone who misses the help file, because I know few people by name who know what a help file is!

There should be a reminded at every reply screen that asks: "Did you know? The Super Mario World hacking forum has its own set of reference files and resources! Check them out if you need help! " For replies that have 'asm' with them and aren't longer than 200 characters, there should be a big bold red warning because that post is probably not useful. |

We had a discussion about this in another board. I believe it is perfectly understandable if you have a REAL REASON to bump it. Like news and stuff. But do not bump a thread with a simple few worded question like "What is ASM?"

Why dont we just get rid of the "New Reply" button once you are past the first 2 pages? Like we have this first page you see when you open this fourm. Then the one page after this. Then if you go one page past that (pg.3) and click on a thread, the New Reply button isn't there. Also, if you try to manually type in the reply URL using that threads number, it will bring you to a "cannot reply" page or something. You could even have it so that power level 2 and above CAN reply, but regular and banned users cannot reply. That way, only pages 1 and 2 have threads you can reply to. Also, maby have it so that the thread creator can reply to their own thread no matter what the page, kinda like how only the poster can edit their own post, but not edit other peoples. I think it would be a good idea, how about you? It would stop bumping. |
