My post in the favorite NES games thread reminded me of weird habits I had when playing through certain games.

Crystalis - After I found out that dying people (that is, people who are lying down and who disappear after you talk to them) never die if you don't talk to them, I just didn't. I'd already been through the game and known what everyone had to say anyway. That part where Shyron gets wiped out always bothered me, and this way, I could pretty much keep everyone in suspended animation forever.

Strider - I used to kneel in tribute of the first miniboss in Japan whenever I passed back through the area where you fight him. I have no idea why. I just did.

Zelda II - I never actually beat this one. I liked to replay it and have fun going through the temples and getting the items and stuff all over again. Whenever I did this, I didn't turn the temples to stone because I hated permanently closing off nifty areas although I usually didn't go back in them again.

Virtually any RPG: I *always* make sure that I'm at 100% before entering any dungeon or tough area. Not 80%, not 90%... full health, full magic. And if I'm really close to levelling up, I get that out of the way before entering the area. So basically I only go when I'm good and ready.

Also, in one of the FIFA games... I don't think you can do it now, but a few years ago you could tackle the goalie as he was holding the ball - which almost always led to a red card. So if I *knew* I was losing the game with a few minutes to go and no chance at coming back, I just started to beat the crap out of the goalie. XD

Nothing overly strange on my end.

Probably the weirdest was in Battletoads, where I somehow got into the habit of using controller 2 (Zitz) to play the game. This kept up for some 13 years until Twin Galaxies made a ruling that controller 1 HAD to be used in setting records.

Although I managed to beat FFII/IV more than once by going through the Sylph/Summon Caves and NOT casting Float. That was fun.

Oh, I did that too but I think the first time I did that was more out of necessity than anything else.

See, I didn't exactly have Float in my spell list when heading there... :\

Way back when Super Mario Bros was the cool new thing (at least to me ) I always broke the two blocks below the ? boxes just before the small staircase. For some reason I was convinced there was invisible treasure in them.

Same here. I have to be at full health, full magic, with all characters at a nice even usually-high level before I even think about tackling a dungeon or boss.

Actually, playing as Zitz in Battletoads gives you a slight edge. One of the electro-blaster thingy monsters in the wookie hole never targets Player 2, so he just sits there until you kill him.

Whenever I play Rollercoaster Tycoon, no matter what type of scenario I am in, I always build a coaster that flies off the track and crashes on the walkways. Always. I don't know why, I just do...

Every racing game. I will play rough. No braking through the curves. I use the car ahead of me to act as a cushion (which is why I can't play Gran Turismo or Forza Motorsport).

Zelda: Link's Awakening. I always keep the Roc's Feather in the B button slot while I leave the sword in the A unless I needed to get past a dungeon. I liked jumping...

I have other customs to playing... just that these were ones I do remember...

I do the same sort of thing, except with Oracle of Ages / Seasons. Unless there's a certain area that requires me to do otherwise, the sword is always on the A button, and the B button's item changes depending on what I need to get through any given area

As for others...

::With any RPG I play that's not on the computer (if it is, I'll find a way to make an infinite health code ), sort of like Colleen, whenever I'm about to face a boss or a similarly tough enemy, I get to the nearest save point, change my party if need be, use what healing items I have to fill all their health and magic up, save again, then go fight. I'm convinced that if I don't do that, I'm going to lose no matter what.

:: In any game that I play that has save points, or whatever else you want to call them, I almost always save twice. I think that there's a chance the first save could have gone wrong somehow, and thus a second one is needed. I'm not the only one in our family that plays games that does that though. My brother is horrible when he's on the computer and makes a savestate. He presses the buttons necessary to do so 6 or 7 times, at least

:: I haven't done this one in a while, but back when the N64 was still popular, and I didn't yet own a copy of Ocarina of Time, I'd play it when over at my friend's house, and before going to sleep, I'd beat Ganondorf / Ganon, just to watch the end. It just wasn't the same if I didn't do that

I'm sure there's more than that, but those are what I can remember for right now.

Whenever I did finish a hammer bros battle in SMB3. I always try to get Mario outside of the screen by flying or by jumping. I just keep doing that for no reason at all.

In RPG's I never bother with levelling up much. Apart from Pok

Whenever I'm playing a Zelda game that I'm familiar with, I always have to get everything. Every heart container, every weapon, every item. Oddly enough, I don't like maxing out my rupees in Zelda games, I'd rather spend them when they're near max. (Maybe because I don't want to find a 300-rupee treasure chest when I'm already at 999 rupees...)

Uh oh!

I managed to beat that entire game easily, even the so-called US Hardtype (FF: Chronicles, seriously, that game is not hard at all).

I'm worse, because I do that in about -any- game that can have numeral values in it. For instance, Metroid; I will hardly ever use any of my missiles or anything that can be depleted until I ultimatly have to, and I almost always have to have full ammo or I just feel "weak", or something.

It wasn't so bad when I played Prime on Hard though, I realized I'd pretty much have to use missiles regurarly throughout the game, so I got over it.

But still, in almost any game that has values like health, ammo, and everything, I always like to be maxed out.

I used to try to fly off the top of the screen as well I guess that could be attributed to how some of those areas scroll up as you fly upwards, and you can't help but think there's a secret up there As well, you've just reminded me of another thing I do in Super Mario Bros. 3. Specifically, in the World 4 hammer bros. battles. Every time I'm i one, I try to bounce of the hammer brother and land on the cloud near the top of the screen.

Just another one of those small things I can't help but doing

Yay! It's not just me! I don't think I'll ever be able to manage playing through a survival horror game without a FAQ because I'm afraid to get stuck without enough health and ammo to win. I went through the first part of Silent Hill 4 myself as much as possible because you can always keep going back to your room for free healing, so I would do that (and save each time I went in case I messed up and got killed the next time I went back to the areas with monsters in them). I didn't mind getting lost, having problems fighting enemies, etc. because it didn't ultimately hurt me at all. It just wasted time. But when that stopped in the second half of the game...forget it.

I also have no interest in seriously trying out chaos mode in Dynasty Warriors 5 for the same reason. In every other difficulty, enemies will randomly drop food, which heals you, but in chaos, you're limited to what you can find in breakable pots throughout the level. Running out of stuff halfway through is teh sux.

Oh, and I get irritated with limited-opportunity items in games (like stuff that you can only steal from a certain boss that will never show up ever again, and if you kill the boss without knowing that, oooops...no stuff for you), so I tend to use guides for games with that sort of thing so I miss out on as few as possible.

- In any RPG, I'm different from most people, as I don't care if I'm not a full health or whatever (unless I only have one character left and at low life). Also, I tend to attack a boss ONLY with my main character. Dunno, I like to scream "TAKE THAT, MOTHERFUCKER. OWNED KTHX!"

- Adventure Games (LoZ, etc), I won't ever finish a boss without making fun of it. (Like: "*dodges every attack* HAHAHA DIE, YOU CAN'T HIT ME!!!!)

- Shooters, I use stealth in any situations, most of the time. Only moment when I rush a level is if I want a cheat (GoldenEye, Perfect Dark). I always headshot, use a silencer. Whenever I rush, I tend to keep an handgun, unless there are swarms of enemies (Then I use explosives).

- Sport Games, I just give up after losing 3526648643487653635546 matches.

I always had the habit of killing mario just to play as Luigi in Super Mario 3 for the nes and Super Mario World.

I always had the habit of playing Orbulon's stage over and over on Wario: Microgames.

I always had the habit of picking up controller 2 and started playing as Kirby's helper in Kirby Super Star.

"When all else fails, use ice." - In any RPG that has Ice (or water, if no ice is around) spells, I will use those Ice spells if enemies have no elemental weaknesses. Not fire, even if it's less MP. Not lightning, even if it's a little stronger.

But that item's completely useless! - I'm an item collector in many games. In Morrowind, I try building up a collection of swords that includes every basic sword in the game as well as most of the artifact swords (Goldbrand, Ice Blade of the Monarch) and a few custom enchanted swords. In FFT, I hold on to weapons long after they're useless, selling them only if I need money.

You realize that MP is not infinite, right? And that you can't buy Ethers? - Screw Potions, I'll abuse healing spells in just about any RPG I play. I find/steal enough MP restoratives anyway, and I can always head back to town to rest in an inn. Morrowind is the only exception to this; I almost never use any magic outside of Alteration, Mysticism, and Illusion in that game, relying on self-made potions and resting for health.

"Dude, I can see you, and we're using grenades." - Like DarkSlaya, I use stealth in most FPSes that I play. Unfortunately, I suck at it. The above quote is from a friend when we were playing GoldenEye...

I forgot to mention that while playing Dynasty Warriors 5, I say things that probably don't make much sense to anyone but me and possibly certain friends.

As Cao Ren - I'm Buster Fucking Beetle! Kids love me! (My nickname for the character fits into a Death to Smoochy line, and it amuses me, so there you go.)

When playing or fighting against Cao Cao - Lots of references to wrecking laundry. (I refer to Cao Cao as Hampy, Destroyer of Linens, because he looks like one of my friends and that was a nickname we gave said friend a few years ago. It's a long story that I'm not going to repeat right now. )

There are certainly more, but I can't remember them right now. The list may get longer after I wake up.

I also get pissed off when one of my favorite officers is an ally and croaks. When playing on Cao Cao's side in the battle of Guan Du, I have to save Xiahou Dun every single time. (On hard, he will die if you don't go and help him right off the bat.)

In Secret of Mana I leveled in the flying fortress thingy. Whenever I went down, like to buy some items (only the sprite could refresh her nearly depleted MP by using Magic Absorb while the other girl couldn't), I always flew to Pandora, becausewith its 5 GP per night it was way cheaper than in Gold City; maybe I even searched places where I could sleep for free.

The thing is: I had about two million GP and 200 GP for a full-night-sleep isn't that much when you earn about 2000 GP for each defeated enemy

Also I like to save a game not with full, but FULL health. So if the main character has something like 240 out of 250 maximum HP, I always want to have equal values before turning off the console.
"Oh no, Angrim has only 89.996 out of 90.000 HP. Let's heal him."

In FF7 and 10, I'll save up Limit Breaks/Overdrives like they don't regenerate, just waiting for something cool to use them on.

Also, in Halo 2, I'm a grenade madman. Watch out.
