I'm just wondering some things about battery back-up, so if anyone knows, I'd be glad for information. How many old games have you got where the battery back-up does not work correctly anymore? My Super Mario World and Super Mario All-Stars cartridges do not load correctly, and have a habit of erasing their saves every now and again. But can you fix games where the battery back-up is failing? Is it possible to replace the batteries? Will modern games suffer from the same problems? I heard that GBA games and memory cards use 'flash' memory, which won't 'fade' away. Is this the case? What about Nintendo 64 games? |

Originally posted by Fyxe I think all pre-next gen console games run on battery... but don't quote me on that. I have never had a problem with that on any game, ever. Perhaps you have bad luck? As for GBA, yes. It uses flash memory. So, the only "battery" power it needs to run is the battery power of the GBA. XD |

Well, it's certainly true that no batteries last forever. Batteries over many years do become very unreliable, so it's a fair bet that battery backup carts will become unreliable at some point. The carts I've played in the past two years were fine, and I've had no problems. |

I've heard from a few sources [websites, people, other such stuff] that if you send them into, say, Nintendo, they'll replace them. Possibly other places too. Or you could just try popping open the cart and replacing it manually. If it's anything like a comp battery, which I believe it is. |

http://www.planetnintendo.com/thewarpzone/battery.html How to replace the battery in a NES game, I saw an guide for SNES once somewhere... I had no game with failing save system yet not even in SMW. Guess that i'm just lucky... I swear I did read somewhere about N64 using batteries for saving, but do not quote me on that. So yeah it will stop saving one day probably... It's possible to replace the battery, heck I think you can send it in to Nintendo and get's it replaced for a small fee. But it's cheaper to replace it yourself. Some GBA games do have an battery thought, but that's only the pok (edited by Kitten Yiffer on 04-07-04 08:17 PM) |

not just pokemon I've had to splice open my fair share of carts...I think Wario Land 4 might be one of the many that uses it

Those batteries probably don't even use as much energy as the SNES/NES ones. Might be wrong but... To be honest, the last time I loaded up my old Zelda cart, the saved games were still there. And that's 10+ years after I first got the game. |

That's Nintendo for you. The most durable products you will ever find. No matter what (the fact that it took me to inadvertantly drop a 100 lb weight on my old bulky green screen gb to DENT the screen in is/was [once] living proof of that). Only exception was the time I bought a Link's Awakening cart that royally f*cked up...even after Nintendo supposedly replaced it o__O;;

The only battery backed up game that ever fucked out on me was Zelda: A Link to The Past (SNES, of course!), that game always glitched out on me, the most recent being the Agahnim Sanctuary Castastrophoe.. |
