They have small patios that have propane heating towers. These things work great, we have one in my back yard for winter gatherings. The Waltzing Weasel Pub and a few clubs in Downtown do that.

I don't smoke, so I dont really care. I like that smoking isnt allowed in public restaurants and such.. I forgot what that was like for a while. Then I went to Las Vegas for a weekend and was bombarded by smokers puffing in my face. Ugh.
I dont go into bars or joints like that, so I dont much care about that either. Just keep it away from me and I'm happy. And the laws seem to be doing a good job of that so far.

Am I the only one here who thinks that there *might* be the potential for a little accident if things don't work quite right?

My mom and I both get bad allergic reactions when we end up in a room with some jerk who drenched herself in perfume. It's supposed to be lightly sprayed on, it's not something to cover your BO or whatever. God.

I don't think second hand smoke is that bad. I had to spend most of my childhood constantly around smoke, because my parents are heavy smokers and didn't give a damn at the time. It was disgusting really, everything turned yellow. I got used to it. I'm no longer in that environment, and I've never noticed anything unusual about my breathing or anything about my body. If you have health issues to begin with I'd understand, but then why would you be in a bar in the first place?
I dunno, requiring that you cannot smoke in bars just doesn't seem right to me.

Its one thing to affect your own health, but taking it inside public places and affecting other people's health is another. Please, keep it outside.

But these places aren't public. They're private establishments whose owners should be able to run them as they see fit.

Exactly there has to be some seperation of government and private property. If we keep going on like this we are going to end up being dependant on our government thus making the United States a "communist" country. Of course they will name it something else but that is what it truly will become.

"Communist"?

No, it wouldn't make it a Communist country if a nation decides to enforce health regulations concerning businesses and their patronage. A Communist country is where the government controls all facets of the economy. This isn't reliance on the government, this is just a poorly designed piece of legislation.

I said like communist. More power to the government is just wrong. If the government controlled everything in the U.S. The people would have no power. And right now if that happened it would be totally constitutional to overthrow that government, but by the time that the government has total power they would have probably allready ratified that from the constitution. But anyway We are the land of the free and yet are freedoms are restricted every day. And pretty soon we won't be able to have guns anymore to stop the government from taking control.

What are you talking about?

Overthrowing the government...because of a ban on smoking in restraunts?

You see that as a MAJOR infringement of rights?

And soont here won't be anymore guns? The heck...? You can buy those government over-throwing automatic weapons now. The US gun laws have been slackened in recent years. All you need to do is hoard ammo to your government overthrowing heart's content.

Actually, even if Legault's statement *did* have some truth to it... non-smokers still outnumber smokers in the United States. Therefore any type of uprising/overthrow would prove... quite moot.

I think what Legault was getting at was the possibility of a slippery slope in concerns to the loss of freedoms. Although, I too think this is far too minor to spark any serious concern.

Oh, I know what he meant, but even *if* something were to happen to cause that, it would have to affect the majority first, not the minority. Smoking or gun control wouldn't cause that.

Now, a reintroduction of prohibition, on the other hand...

This might be the libertarian side of me speaking, but leave it up to the establishment. It's not like people are forced to got here; they can let people smoke on THEIR property whenever they want.

If there is a new discovery that states that...I don't know...Second hand smoke can cause your testicles to begin to talk and eat the flesh on your legs...Then I might be worried. Such to the point that I wouldn't worry about people banning smoking in bars and restraunts. That or something that states that it is more harmful than thought of already and therefore poses a more definitive public health risk, then I would not oppose a piece of legislation banning the consumption of tobacco products within an establishment like that.

In Canada they've found ways around that, by declaring their establishment private clubs and charge a "members fee" at the door. Or registering it as a cultural bar. Particularly effective for my middle eastern friends and I who enjoy smoking hookah.

I think it's probably time we start phasing out tobacco. I'm not really sure how it will ultimately be done, but this seems like a good start - cutting out places you can smoke, then probably limiting suppliers, continuing to increase tax etc. Probably the ridiculous percentage of tax revenue raised on tobacco is the reason that it's still on sale, at least in this country.

mean, how many people can honestly say they smoke because they choose to?
