A Linux mag has a free copy of Lindows going with it, without all the documentation and such.
It's the latest version, and at

Nooooo!! Do NOT get Lindows!

Lindows is okay, I guess, but it poses the same security kinda problems that Windows does in some respect.

A part of the security aspect of Linux is that you do not run as Root (the closest thing I think in Windows is "Administrator") which helps to keep your machine nice and safe and secure and happy and such

But, like Windows, Lindows allows you to run as Root, causing the same kinds of security problems that Windows has to some extent. People have been having problems with it. Sure, it's easy for "newbies" to use the system, but it's also easy for those same newbies to stuff up the system!!

I suggest getting Knoppix/Gnoppix first -- they are Live-CD distributions of Linux (meaning you can run them straight from the CD without installing anything) based on Debian GNU/Linux. Knoppix has a KDE interface, Gnoppix has a Gnome interface (I like Gnome!). You can use Knoppix/Gnoppix to get a little look at Linux before you go the whole hog and install it. You can also play Frozen Bubble! (my FAVOURITE Linux game! YAAAAAAY!)

If you are gonna go the whole hog, I recommend Fedora Core 1 (Not Red Hat, the newer Fedora is better)

Hope that helps

Lindows is Linux, it's as secure as any other Linux machine IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING!

Don't get Lindows... it allows you to log in as root accidentally, and you can screw your system if you don't know what you're doing. Linux utilities don't usually have warning messages. If you say that you want to format the disk, you won't get prompted for confirmation.

Get a real Linux distro. Like RedHat or Gentoo.

Well, I don't have to worry about Lindows security threats any more... The magazine went out publishing yesterday, and the later edition came out with SuSE today

I've got Knoppix, and I'm going to give it a go as soon as I get my hands on a working CDR Drive (the one I had recently died ).

I think I'm definately going to give SuSE a try. I managed to find a linux driver for my modem without much trouble. Let's hope things work

Is SuSE any better than Lindows?

I haven't used SuSE so I can't really tell you much about it, but it certainly has a better reputation than Lindows does.

Ok, thanks Taryn I'll pick it up later this month and try it out

I might post before then about Knoppix, seeing as I've never made a booting CD before from a cover DVD
