well, in the original japanese versions of FF1-FF6, it's called "Gil". They just called it "GP" in the american versions.

to answer the poll question: I pronounce it "gill", which is pretty close to how the word itself ("gil") is spelled.

You know why? It's a stupid reason now, but in the old NES and SNES days, it kinda made sense.
GP = two characters
Gil = three characters

Of course there's a simple way around this little bit. In most games, it's possible to fit a couple letters into one tile (ii, ll, tt, etc) so Gil can be two characters and not three. Seems very lame that Nintendo didn't go with this...

I pronounced it as "Jill" alot at first because I would say it in french, but when I started talking in english more, I started pronouncing it as "Gill".

I don't really care what the currency is called though, but I guess I am a little used to Gil by now.

I would have to pronounce it "Gill", as in a fishes gill... It's only common sense... I mean yeah... There's the name "Gillian", but that's a name, and Gil is a currency... So, you should get what i mean. If not hit yourself overe the head a few hundred times, until your mental stability resembles mine... then you'll understand .

My answer comes from an old song about the Pied Piper. It was said in the tune that the mayor of Hamlet had promised to pay the Piper 50 00 gilder, which I took to be the currency of Hamlet. The g in gilder is pronounced with a GUH, not a JUH sound. Perhaps Gil is an abbreviation for this? Either way, it's the stem of why I pronounce it "gill".

When I first played FF7 I was confused so I said it like "Jill" as in the name. As time went on I figured "Gill" like part of a fish, made more sense. So now I say Gill . I haven't really thought of it being like gill. I just said "Jill" because of the G sound. I guess my mind isn't very open..or something..nevermind.

Gil I believe, came from Europe, somewhere. Although I've never called gil "jill", a friend and I have pronounced Sephiroth in a different way. We used to pronounce it like this: Suh-feer-uth. Then he comes to me one day and says: "My brother calls him Seh-fur-oth". Once I figured out the truth, it was really hard to change.

In FFX and X2, it's pronounced "Gill", so that's how I always say it. I consider that to be the official pronunciation.

It's "Gill".

What I don't get is why Square translated it as "GP". IT's obvious from the games that a single Gil is very small -- roughly equivalent to one yen or (at today's exchange rates) just over eight tenths of a US cent.

And people still say "zeni" to mean money in general even now! Especially Osakan banker/loan shark types who want to sound tough. What Capcom games use this word?
