I know somebody that's diabetic *yeah I can't spell* anyway she's been controlling it but lately, it's been high. She has changed her diet, and ate certain foods, but it seems to stay high. She takes her insulaint, and helps a little. Does anybody have suggestion, cuz she seen the doctor. Please, I don't want her to die...

1. Go to doctor
2. Do whatever he says

Chances are nobody here has a PhD in any medical field. If she's doing what her doctor tells her to, that's all she can do.

She has to keep in mind that ALL foods have sugar in them; not just candy and sweets.
Show her this page: http://www.mendosa.com/common%5Ffoods.htm
It's a list of the most common foods in a diabetic diet, and how they rate for sugar content.

Well, I'm diabetic [type 1] and my humoglobin a1c count is about 7.5, so perhaps I can help.

Anyway, here's some suggestions:

1. Does she have an insulin pump? If not, she should get one. They kick ass.

2. She should make sure that she is fully aware of exactly how many carbs she is eating at a time. She should look at the package and count if she doesn't know.

3. Assuming she carb counts, she should make sure that she always has her ratio of insulin:carbs right. If she is still running high after doing that properly, she should increase her rate [ex: if she has a count of 1 unit per 10 carbs, and she is running high still when following this, she should make her count 1 unit per 9 carbs... etc]

4. If she has the pump, she should increase her basal rates for the time of day when her numbers seem to be most high...

Well, since I don't know a lot about the situation, I can't help much more than that. I would need to know all the things she does currently concerning her diabetes care. Has she had keto-acidosis yet? Or has it not gotten that bad?

EDIT: btw, you spelled diabetic right

EDIT2:

Well, actually, with diabetes care, a lot of it is making corrections on your own. The doctor will give you ideas, but you need to be counting the carbs and adjusting your rate on your own, not just when the doctor tells you to. Also, why couldn't a doctor be a she?

EDIT 3: If she does not carb count, but instead has a set insulin rate, then she needs to absolutely make sure she always stays consistent with how much she eats, and doesn't eat when she's not supposed to.

When sex is unknown, you use "he". I try to use "he / she" or "that person" online just to avoid pissing off feminists, but in all reality, "he" is proper grammar.

Lastly, when I say "Do whatever the doctor says", I mean that if the Doctor tells you that you need to count carbs, then start counting carbs

Yeah, there's the thing with diabetes: No one really knows what your body's gonna do. My father's Type 2, and he's been controlling it with his diet (low-carb). So more often than not, if he's got problems, it's because his blood sugar's low. I could probably answer some specific questions, but I dunno too much... I'm trying to lose weight so I don't end up like him.

But how often does she take her blood sugar? Hopefully, it's often...

Assuming she's type 1, she SHOULD be checking it AT least 4 times a day, and whenever she eats

Kefka: You DO know how much insulin pumps are, right? 'Cause they range from 5,000 to 10,000 dollars (Cdn). I work for an insurance company, I get calls like that all the time. And more often than not, they're not covered by insurance plans.

Well, I know they run from 5K-10K, but my insurance covered about 90% of that... So, we only paid 500 bucks... I was unaware that most insurance plans don't cover it.

EDIT: also, it doesn't hurt to ask. I was just wondering. I was very aware of the possibility of her not having one. Knowing these things helps ya know the situation better and be able to come up with good suggestions.

Hmm. Very true.
Just get her to call up her insurance company and ask if she's covered for DIA05. That'll really mess 'em up. (DIA05 is the medical procedure code for an insulin pump...)

Eat fish, no dressing besides lemon juice, it's pretty dangerous to eat only fish since it doesn't provide much energy, but it's very good for vitamins, and it's fairly filling. Don't get the fishsticks with all the orange stuff around it that I don't know the name of in english, and don't cook the fish with oil. It's probably the best way to get rid of high blood sugar content..
