Corruption? File system gone screwy on a partition? HD crash? Damn that sucks. I would panic if that happened to me.

Luckily I have a backup... somewhere.

Ouch. What happened? If you used NTFS, you might be able to recover them using RStudio. It worked when I accidentally created an EXT3 filesystem over mine. (NTFS keeps backups of the filesystem, which pwns.)

damn... that's 375% the size of my disk, and 1153% of my own data files (excl. OS)

Was it the removable hard disk that got lost/stolen? If it's just a format/delete problem, those can be easily fixed.... it's super-easy to recover files and the whole filesystem when you use FAT, I dunno about HH's mentioned program, I use ntfsundelete, which probably doesn't have a version for Windows.

Funny thing about that. My porn and emulators (30gb total) were the only files I didn't lose.

Only 30 GB of porn? LIGHTWEIGHT. (Uh, you did recover at least some of what was lost, right?)

so, how were your files organised? unless someone did shift-del on your directories, it is hard to imagine how exactly they were lost--in all likely hood, majority of the data is still there; you just lost the pointer to them
