OK, I'm preparing to begin work on Ninji 2. My current plan is to have four or five themed "islands", each with two or three levels (Sonic style) and with their own unique graphic sets, and with a final, five level or so finale. The current ideas I've had for islands so far is...

1.) Subcon - SMB2-style level design, SMB2 enemies. NO STUPID GODDAMN SMAS JUNGLE BACKGROUND
2.) Yoster - Similar to SMW/SDW, enhanced SMW tilesets, maybe some SMW-style YI enemies?
3.) Birabuto(?) - That Egypt world from SML1 bought back to life in 16-bit glory. If I somehow beat that "gradius-style level" code out of BMF that he showed a long time ago...

So, any ideas for worlds etc? Maybe what bosses they'd use?

Oh, and all ASM donations are accepted. That reminds me, anyone got the "Disable 2player" patch?

I always liked the idea of a world that takes place inside various machines. Lots of gears and wires around and all that fun stuff.

how bout this time you make him grow instead of one hit death, not much of an escaped animal if he walk into a mushroom and dies dont ya think, however i thought the first was fantastic and really unique, i loved it

hey, i don't know if this is what you're looking for, or if these ideas have already been used but here we go....

an urban level, like a city of some sort... mushroom city or something like that? with buildings in the background, street lights, firehydrants, etc... (or ninji saga style equivilants) possibly a city in ruins, with destroyed buildings acting as hills and plateaus...

i'm sure this has been used before, but a sky/flying themed level... or an underground level, even... with tunnels and stuff... or better yet, an outer space type level, that takes place on the moon or on mars or something (could make for some pretty palletes / interesting tile sets andor sprites)...

perhaps a level inside a giant enemy? or a castle setting would be fairly original, as far as i know... or on a sail boat... sail boats are cool....

Making a Ninji look like a Ninji when 32 pixels tall and 16 wide is an impossible task.

However if someone can make Super Mario only have Small Mario's collusions (16x16) you WILL get powerups.

Would Ninji fit into a 2D version of Banjo-Kazooie? If you feel ambitious and want to give that a try, go for it...

Vehicle, eh? Ninji in some sort of robotic walker or maybe a robotic Mario clone would work. Then you could have laser or wing power-ups. Wings would explain the gliding better than a jetpack.

- Make the next hack MUCH longer. TNS was way, way too short.
- New overworlds are a must. TNS's was...um...uninspired?
- Use lots of original graphics. Considering your l33t drawing skills, it's disappointing to see you use so many rips from other games.
- Eliminate as many bugs as possible. Playtest, playtest, playtest.
- Overhaul the ending sequence. (not suggesting ASM hackery, but at least more graphical changes)

I really hate to say it, but in some ways, the original Ninji Saga felt rushed. Lots of stuff left unchanged, like the aforementioned overworld and most of the ending, and some icky bugs remained. The second time around, take as much time as you need to make a truly impressive hack. Make it stand out from the rest of the pack. You've got so much experience now, put it to good use!

1. Look for a thread by BMF with "HDMA" in it's title. That's what you want.

2. try the ice board's extras section. It has the 1 player patch. Also, look in the ROM locations thread and old ROM locations thread one, as well as the backup .mht files in the old one. Very helpful.

3. A surrealist nightmare? Or how about a jungle temple? Or a bigger techno base? Make sure however that the OW's are original this time, that was my second biggest complaint, biggest was glitches.

I still vote for my exploding base idea which I posted in the original Ninji Saga thread. Perhaps you can do it now, as there's no rush.

@Zerodius:

Mechanical castle= Look at the clock tower in one of Anikiti's hacks.
Space station= Already done by BMF.
Frozen city= not bad. Blizzard Buffalo's stage from X3 should cover it.
Japanese castle: I was gonna do that...
Severely messed up place: No. Just... no.

for a forest: you can use the forest frenzy BG or the MMX sting chamelion BG with smw FG

oh, and for a frozen city mentioned in the post above, there is a very good BG in one of the MMX games for that, I will rip it if you want (edit: darn, I was beaten to saying this, but I will still rip it *pulls out laptop and opens LM and all those other m16-7k programs I use*)

Worldmap: YES. I want an original worldmap, and will try to learn the editor as such.
Original Worlds: I don't see why not. Sure, it means more work for me, but what doesn't?

And yeah, the original one was mildly rushed. Mainly with the last few levels on the Zoo, where I just felt burnt out.

I'd say that glitches were the biggest problem in the first part of the saga. Glitches suck. If you hadn't rushed and instead taken your time and released a finished hack Ninji Saga 1 would have been far more awesome than it was. Rushing your finished hack seemed to create problems in level design, create more glitches, and all kinds of crap. Keep that in mind.

Dude, YES. Turn the mushroom into a pink (or otherwise differently-colored) Ninji and animate it.

OOH! OOH! OOH!

You could also change the flower into an orange Ninji that spits fireballs! In this case, you'd swap the colors around so that the orange one stands on the purple one's shoulders, so the fireballs look like they're coming from the right spot.

For the feather, you'd have a caped superhero Ninji, once again standing on the other guy's shoulders. This one would be a bit tougher to animate, of course, with all the flying and spinning and dive-bombing actions and whatnot, but it'd be friggin' awesome! You could give the purple guy some really wacky "OH MY GOD I'M GOING TO DIE AIEEEEEEE" facial expressions for the in-flight poses.
