When I hear "air conditioning," I do think of cold air. We don't use the air conditioner to heat the house, we use the heater.

While I'm well aware that air conditioning can be used to either cool or heat the air, I find that most people (around here, anyway) do refer to the cooling of air as "air conditioning" as cooling. Heck, they say "turn on the heater" when they mean "turn the air conditioner's heating function on" That, or they say "air" (turn the air on) or "heat" (turn the heat on) to refer to cold air and hot air. But that's just the majority of people here, not everyone. And, as I've said, I live in Oklahoma... Bunch of idiots for the most part in my experience. |

I only did use the heating function of my AC that was in the car. . . at home, I have a kotatsu, which is sort of like a table that you put your legs under and it keeps you warm. So, I never really used an air conditioner to warm me up inside of the house =| But I did know you could use it for two things.

I almost always use the term "air conditioning" to refer to the cooling of air, but yes, I'm aware that the device can in fact cool or heat the air. You just leave me and my mannerisms alone!

Canada is not cold in the summer. Montreal is CERTAINLY not cold in the summer. Right now... 29C outside and it feels (humidex) like 39C. Tomorrow looks to be the same. |

That's what I thought when I was little. After all, the air conditioner was that box in the window that magically produced cold air even in the nastiest summer heat.

...And how is that different from today? As far as I'm concerned, it still is a magic box - after all, it's keeping me alive and sane right now, whereas with the humidity today, I'd be sapped of all my energy and will to live.

Well...the box is still magical, but since then, I've learned that air conditioning encompasses all indoor climate control, not just cooling. It still seems to be generally used as a synonym for cooling, though. Humidity kills me as well. I've been doing a lot of work outside this weekend (namely, making molds to cast fiberglass parts with), and it hasn't been horrifically hot, but it doesn't take me all that long to get loopy and need to come back in and cool off. |

I've thought about it on occasion, though it's something you figure out, nobody just comes out and says it. In spite of that, this thread smartass, b/c no one ever refers to A/C for heating. They say turn the heat on. And in the summer they say turn th A/C on. |

I think of A/C as cool air.... But then again, the same tool that switches A/C to Heater is called a thermostat. THERM-O-STAT. |

We used to refer to the AC for heating, sometimes... back when it still worked. Then the heating stopped working on the reverse-cycle aircon, so we only tended to refer to it for cooling. Which, itself was unreliable. |

People could really use A/C right now. It's 16C and people are going crazy, lying on their front lawns in their underwear and stuff. Man, where did this heat come from?

Well, the general Norwegian sentiment is that "as long as the sun is up, the weather is warm". Temperatures seldom go past 30C anywhere in Norway (only happens on the hottest days of July/August), and this is Northern Norway. At this time, we could have had snow, but we were lucky, and summer set in early. Remember, the place I'm living at is about as far north as the northern tip of Alaska. All that being said, it will become hotter here, of course. We'll probably have somewhere close to the 30's at some point, but people still find 16C to be a very nice temperature. I've been walking in a t-shirt for the first time this year. |
