I'm making this thread just to see how many people think (or at one point thought) that the term "air conditioning" strictly refers to cold air and not both warm and cold like it actually does mean. Come on, be honest. |

Nope, always knew it was both. People are too accustomed to the term 'Central Air' meaning both that they think AC is just for one thing.

Whenever it's hot air, it's always called heating.

I've known it for a while as both, hence the name air conditioning. Otherwise it would be air drying/cooling, or ADC.

I always knew the point of AC was to regulate the air temperature, but really, who actually uses it to heat the room?

No, I didn't. "condition the air" doesn't sound like any common sense. am I wrong? When I say I wish I had an air conditioner, it's always because I want to feel cooler. I use heater to feel warmer. That's how most people talk. No one will think I wish I could condition my air to both hot and cold temperatures if I talk about an air conditioner. |

I can condition my air from 40 degrees to 99 degrees depending on my comfort level. (edited by Legion on 06-10-05 06:34 PM) |

Having had (very poor) reverse-cycle air conditioning at home, I know (and knew from fairly young) that airconditioners can be used to both heat and cool. However, the heating on our aircon sucked, so we used a heater instead |

Hold on, wait a second. Using air conditioners to cool the air. Why would anyone be stupid enough to do that? < Seriously, though. In Scandinavia, people generally don't have air conditioners, because there are only so many days out of the year when you would actually need to cool down, while there are loads of days one could use more heat. We therefore don't go for the hassle of air conditioners, when heaters are basically all we need. Cars are probably the only things here where people have AC-systems. |

Well, in South Australia, we need both.... cooling (for those fun 40 degrees days) and heating.... (for when it uhhhhh... gets cold...). so we see a lot of advertising for reverse cycle air conditioning.....

To cool the room. Some simple ACs just have a fan, which cools the room. Also, most electric ACs take too much electricity when I heat the room! In Japan, we need to fight with the humidity and the temp at the same time in summer. |

We have a AC at home, that is actually used more for warming up the house than cooling it. Still, we can get quite hot summers in South Sweden. |

Our house has heaters, which are used in the winter, and a very nice air conditioner which is only used in the summer; although sometimes we just have it cycle the air as opposed to blasting out wave after wave of yummy coolness. The heaters were in here long before the AC. Trust me, no AC on a summer day here... |
