In a sure sign that the era of mobile computing has arrived, notebooks have for the first time outsold desktops in the United States in a calendar month, the research firm Current Analysis says. After tracking sales from a sampling of electronics retailers, Current Analysis says notebook sales accounted for 53 percent of the total personal computer market last month, up from 46 percent during the same period last year. San Diego-based Current Analysis does not follow worldwide personal computer sales. Spurring demand for notebooks is their overall price drop as quality has improved, says Sam Bhavnani, senior analyst for Current Analysis. "Just a few years ago, the performance of notebooks was nowhere near where it is today," he said. Notebook prices fell 17 percent during the past year while desktop prices dipped only 4 percent. Some of the features common in most notebooks are longer-lasting batteries, CD burners and wireless capability. The computing crowd is increasingly requiring mobility. Last year, 80 percent of notebooks offered wireless; this year, it's 95 percent, Current Analysis says. "There used to be a time when people expected a reply to an e-mail within a couple of days. Now they expect a response within 24 hours. People want to stay connected wherever they are," said Bhavnani. Notebooks will continue to grab bigger shares of the PC market, Bhavnani predicted. "You're not going to see the desktop go away though." Got this article off of yahoo news. Its actually really interesting... So who here has a notebook? |

Unfortunately, I have to wait until I graduate from high school before I get a notebook. Until then, I'm stuck with this shitty desktop.

I want one too. Those statistics may be flawed though. Many people buy their desktops piece-by-piece and assemble them themselves. Surely these can't be counted in the sales of desktop systems? (Unless someone walks into a store and buys a hard drive, motherboard, CPU, etc all at once, you can't really tell whether they're building a system or just upgrading or replacing a component.) With laptops you can't really do that, because they're not so flexible. You generally can't take something out of one and put it in another, you need to buy the whole system in one piece. |

I'm actually going to be getting a laptop before I go off to college. Given the time of the season, it doesn't surprise me to see this kind of data. HH is right, though. More than half of my friends have had thier PCs built by someone they know. So, I wouldn't look past the idea that the numbers are off in this manner. |

I have one. I love it, except for the weak wireless connection I get from it at times. It's great to have on vacations and to go wherever I like in the house and still be online.

Notebooks are nice (I use my iBook for everything). The only problem is that now you're going to see a lot more strain/stress-related injuries from laptop usage. Why? Because they're absolutely horrible from an ergonomic standpoint. Shouldn't be a problem for most people though. |

Personally, I wouldn't want a laptop as my main machine. Desktops are much easier (and cheaper) to upgrade, as well as cheaper to purchase initially. Toss in the fact that I have a full size keyboard, mouse, surround sound, and a 19" monitor, and I pretty much defeat the purpose of a laptop anyway. I DO have one, but I rarely (if ever) use it. I think the last time I did use it was about 4-5 months ago!

I actually have surround sound on two computers here. Thought I should upgrade the older computer with some more RAM and a better graphics card and processor. And yeah, I can understand if Laptops would be good if you're on the move or like to be outdoors alot but I seen too many people who use a laptop on the same desktop all the time. Thought, I would want one Laptop for the few days where i'm away from home. And we talk about two-three weeks per year or so... |

I am saving up for a laptop... but right now, I am not sure. I would be afraid that when I get it, I won't have time to use it. Besides, all that would be on it would be games. I am waiting to get a laptop. I have other priorities before that (school clothes (yes, my mom is making me buy my own... and I am only in 11th grade...), car, etc.). Then maybe a laptop after that... |

Originally posted by Yiffy Kitten I prefer desktops overall as well--for all the same reasons as Yiffy Kitten. Laptops are good in general if you move around a lot or you live in a temporary location. I barely use my laptop nowadays because I'm no longer in computer related classes. For the past 6 months it's basically been another desktop because I have been using it for downloading. So yeah, laptops may be cool but I think at some point, you wish you didn't spend the money for it |

Yiffy Kitten, I'll give you 2 bucks for it. For me, the problem would be synchronization. I'd want to have all my files up-to-date on both, which is hard when they're two separate disks. Especially when I take it away from home and can't maintan a connection to the desktop. I'd work something out though. |

Seriously, we can't have "Folders" for our own stuff? But honestly, I'd rather have a desktop if I had the money. Maybe with a smaller LCD screen that I can take around the place ... Originally posted by Kitten Yiffer I tried the outdoors thing, but my iBook's screen becomes invisible in sunlight. Sun exposure is generally bad for it too. Doesn't matter. Pen and paper is better for the eyes and posture anyway. |

Are you making the assumption that I have Win98? I have XP, and it's still pointless. It slows down the computer incredibly; then you have 4 User Accounts, when only 2 of them are used reguarly, isn't that pointless? |
