I found a program that can, among other useful things, turn the monitor on and off in Windows. It's a nice feature, but Windows doesn't seem to realize it's been turned off. If the screen saver starts, someone IMs me (even if it doesn't pop up a new window), or whatever else the monitor turns back on. How can I get Windows to not turn it back on until I hit a key/the mouse? (Even if I have to make my own monitor-control program, it's not that hard. )

A power button. Most monitors have this. Yours should too. Seriously. If you want it off, and not to be turned on until YOU dictate, why don't you just push the power button? I either hit the power button on mine, or let it time out (20 mins) if I forget about it. Even when I'm IMed, it stays off until I move the mouse or hit the keyboard. |

you know...that's a good idea--there have been 5,6 threads on this by him trying to "save" power when the ultimate way to "save" power is not not use it

Yeah, I do that... I can't have it turn back on at a specific time or if something goes horribly wrong though.

then your video card sucks or just do not use the "monitor turn off after" option...

What's my video card have to do with it? It can't very well push the power button. Also, it's not the auto-monitor-off function that causes a problem, it's new windows being launched or flashed. I don't want to disable the screen saver, because I do sometimes leave without shutting it off, and that won't prevent things like getting an IM from doing it.

HH, I don't get it. If your monitor turns itself back on after you've been IMed, or a window pops up, even if you're not at it, and you have Windows set to turn it off (and not a secondary app) after x amount of minutes (and something overrides that), you have other issues outside of Windows. Check your drivers, look for programs running that might interrupt Windows's power saving schemes. Check your BIOS settings, make sure you have it set to APIC, S1 or S3 STR, and a host of other things. |

I agree with Yiffy Kitten... You should consider purchasing a monitor that has a power button. Either that or use your current power button. And if it's nonexistent or broken, unplug the monitor.

Er, it does have a power button. I just want to be able to turn it on and off without having to actually walk over and push the button.

Walk over? How far away is your monitor? I can easily turn mine off and on my extending my arm to it. |

Look, this isn't about why I'd prefer to do it through software than through the power button itself... I just need to know why it keeps turning back on. Yiffy Kitten, I can't think of anything that would interrupt it, and I don't recall my BIOS having any such options. I'm not using Windows' auto-shutoff though, I'm using that program I mentioned to turn it on or off whenever I want. That should be the same as if it happened via timeout, but Windows doesn't seem to notice it. (Even if I have to write my own program to do it, it wouldn't be a problem.) |

I seen something similar to happen, if I have Command Prompt in fullscreen mode and I have flashing turned on in mIRC, as soon some activity starts it reverts back to window mode. Why it does that is beyond me, thought it could be something Windows is made to do for showing "Urgent messages". It's just annoying for me when I use old DOS apps... but it is Windows who does that. Or if it's certain brands of video cards, but I seen it doing that on severeal computers. IM programs blink in the same way, and I actually wonders if that's why it's doing so. Windows wants your attention and changes video mode (aka, it turns it on). Don't know any solution as I also turn off with the power button. |

Yeah, it kills fullscreen too, which is quite annoying but I never really use fullscreen anyway. Even things that don't do that, though, like the screen saver will turn it back on.

Have you tried disabled the option that says "not to take focus away" I think that is some setting in TweakUI... maybe that is what is going on as other applications are taking focus away thus causing your computer to turn on.

True, and if you turn that option on, that may solve your problem. Why is your answer, HH, to write your own program (or use onwe already written), when Windows does it for you? It just doesn't make sense to me, to use system resources on another program, when what you want is already coded into the shell. |

Windows doesn't have a 'turn monitor off right now' option. I used another program to do so, and I figured I could easily write my own version if I need to. TweakUI won't install either. It says something about not being able to find a function of some sort. |

then your version of windows is messed up in some form by your customizing it... anyways, all the stuff in TweakUI is just registry keys. So I'm sure someone out there has published the registry key to prevent focus from being taken away... |

Well I don't think that's going to work, because the change it says I should make has already been made. |
