Well, now that I know I'm going into hospital, I'm gonna want things to do in the hospital. It's not a good idea to take anything valuable in (so that rules out things like my gameboy) so a book'd be good. But I have no idea what to read.... Does anybody have any recommendations for a book I could read in hospital? At the moment I'm not sure what to get, maybe the book for Fight Club or something... I dunno really yet. |

Fight Club was cool, but it was quick. Catch-22, Join Me, 1984, The Death and Life of Bobby Z are some good books ranging from classic to really good |

If you haven't already, read a Stephen King book, especially if it's going to be a while. You can probably get something like It, The Stand (the new, uncut version) or 'Salem's Lot. They're all really good books.

Fight Club is a really good book if you havent read it yet. I just finished Trainspotting myself. It deals with some pretty heavy content, but it's pulled off so well that you just don't care. I reccomend reading Fight Club first, since it's fairly short. If you like that, then give Trainspotting a try. |

I HATE Trainspotting. I read 40 pages, and it burned my retinas. I'm sure it would be a good story, if it wasn't written in the actual accent. |

Any Steinbeck. The English Patient by Ondaatje. Any of Coleridge's poems. The Divine Comedy by Dante. Neuromancer by William Gibson. Anything about Louis Riel. Ziff has spoken! |

Read The Count of Monte Cristo. It's the finest piece of literature to have ever been produced.

I'm going more towards James Joyce's Ulysses or maybe Don Quixote being the finest piece of relatively modern literature. But the BEST piece of literature ever created. EVER. Never to be bested. Oedipus Rex of Sophocles. Although the Agammenon of Aeschlyus is pretty good. In addition, the Ecologues are the REAL best work of Virgil. |

Taken from Amazon, Dune: This Hugo and Nebula Award winner tells the sweeping tale of a desert planet called Arrakis, the focus of an intricate power struggle in a byzantine interstellar empire. Arrakis is the sole source of Melange, the "spice of spices." Melange is necessary for interstellar travel and grants psychic powers and longevity, so whoever controls it wields great influence. The troubles begin when stewardship of Arrakis is transferred by the Emperor from the Harkonnen Noble House to House Atreides. The Harkonnens don't want to give up their privilege, though, and through sabotage and treachery they cast young Duke Paul Atreides out into the planet's harsh environment to die. There he falls in with the Fremen, a tribe of desert dwellers who become the basis of the army with which he will reclaim what's rightfully his. Paul Atreides, though, is far more than just a usurped duke. He might be the end product of a very long-term genetic experiment designed to breed a super human; he might be a messiah. His struggle is at the center of a nexus of powerful people and events, and the repercussions will be felt throughout the Imperium. Dune is one of the most famous science fiction novels ever written, and deservedly so. The setting is elaborate and ornate, the plot labyrinthine, the adventures exciting. Five sequels follow. --Brooks Peck--This text refers to the Hardcover edition. From Library Journal Dune is to science fiction what The Lord of the Rings is to fantasy. Though fans believed they had bid a sad farewell to the sand planet of Arrakis upon Herbert's death in 1986, his son Brian has assumed writing the Nebula and Hugo award-winning series with the help of Kevin J. Anderson. But the original is always the most popular, and Ace here offers a good-quality hardcover complete with maps, a glossary, and appendixes. The book's huge fan base should expand even more thanks to a six-hour miniseries premiering on the Sci-Fi Channel later this year that is said to be more faithful to the book than David Lynch's truly awful 1984 feature film. Originally posted by Toxic1984 is a good book, even if the scenario that was described was a little overkill it still gave me an insight on "Big brother" stuff... I would recommend it for political active persons. I should look into the Dune books, I only played the strategy games (which apparently have alot of things... diffrently). Never read the books. |

I'd reccomend the Alexandre Dumas "d'Artagnan Romances" series, which includes The Man in the Iron Mask. If you've seen the movie, read the book anyway. I feel that the mask itself was a metaphorical representation of the very concept of opression and despair, which is something that the movie doesn't really convey. Frank Baum's stories of the Land of Oz are something to consider. If you want fantasy that has an indescribable human element, try the Song of Fire and Ice series by George Martin. A lot of fantasy books tend to get caught up in the whimsy; you're more focused on the dragons and magical spells than on the people involved. Also, there tends to be a strong stereotypical sense of "good" versus "evil" in the genre. A Song of Fire and Ice lacks both flaws, I'm particularly satisfied with the way that even the antagonists are portrayed as having conviction in and reason for what they do, and the protagonists aren't infallable pilars of goodness, either. Magic is present, but rare and prestigious, used subtly where other series overuse it to the point that it becomes banal. In fact, a new book in the series is due out next month, and another one come November. I think it's fun to be involved with a currently-running series. Sure, you can discuss books of ages past, but they're over, so you'll never be able to make predictions for the future or anticipations of events to come; what was, was.
