For the first and final time...

No DS emulators support commercial roms. They are RSA encrypted with a reason!

No they aren't. I have successfully unpacked the built-in FAT system to two folders in Windoze. Some very important -part(s)- of the rom, I don't know which, are RSA-encrypted.

Recent FlashMe developments remove the RSA checks for Download Play, but with full games being far bigger than 4 megs, you can guess the end results.

iDeaS seems like the one emulator that has the BEST chance of loading commercial roms at some point, but when/if that happens is all still very much up in the air. There's been some work done (a few commercial demos show something such at Metroid Prime Hunters and Meteos) but there's still a long, long way to go.

1) We have a very large RSA key to find.

2) The emulator authors may decide to never support commercial roms just to piss off the pirates.

Hey, the possibility's there.

Then again, they'll never have to make the choice, considering the RSA length.

That's true. I know lots of people did say that the odds of emulating CPS2 roms was very low due to the encryption, but lo and behold, the encryption ended up being bypassed and everyone was happy. (As for CPS3 roms, that might happen... oh... in 20 years? All I know is that the protection on those is brutal.)

Heck, PS2 emulation's ahead of DS emulation at the moment.

Say... People hacked the DS firmware to bypass RSA checks with wireless play. Couldn't they hack it to do the same for carts? That would at least let you make some sort of flash cart without having to encrypt the ROMs.

...Come to think of it, I'm no expert but shouldn't cracking it be a simple matter of disassembling and/or hacking the firmware?

*meaningful bump*

A new wave of DS cart dumps (26!) just came out and a bunch of them DO show something on the latest version of iDeaS. Nothing *extremely* noteworthy (for example, none of the games are playable but some get to a title screen or have messed up colors or have something visible) but apparently the dumping method for this last batch was different; not hacked like the first 20+ so dumps were.

At least they can run more than homebrewn tech demos now but... well. That's not telling much.

Besides, clicking on a emulated touch screen isn't probably as effective as a real touch screen and dosen't give the same feel obviously. :/

It'll probably depend on the game. Something like Super Mario 64 or a puzzle game (where stylus use is optional if supported) will obviously be a lot more enjoyable than the new Kirby game.

Strange, almost all of the new dumps of the DS roms have gone missing, and I can't seem to find them anymore. Maybe they've been found to be bad dumps.

EDIT: Never mind, found 'em. I got a Twilight Princess preview with 16 screens to work in the latest version of iDeaS, along with the demo of Meteos.

EDIT2: Here is a list of roms that show signs of life in iDeaS:
0007 Polarium (U)
00026 Pokemon Dash (U)
Zelda Gallery (U)
Meteos Demo (U)

The emulator from Nintendo's development kit also leaked a while ago. It doesn't play very many games, and not very fast. It could run GoldenEye seemingly perfect, but at 5fps it wasn't a very enjoyable experience
The emulator is also illegal, as it is from a development kit not meant for the public.

I tried the most recent version of DSlinux on iDeaS. It works up until the point it's trying to free memory. Then it just... freezes.

Surprising that GoldenEye would be the one single game that runs well while the others all "white screen".

What are the odds a future version of that dev kit gets leaked... :\ Apparently the leaked emulator does run PD roms well though.

The only one that runs commericial games is Nintendos Ensata, no I won't give it to you. IdeaS ran part of the metroid hunters demo so wait for that stuff. Or you could get passme and a flashcard or NeoFlash.
