Since the nintendo revolution will have an emulator built in to play all older games, do you think someone will comes out with a way to use that emulator to play our custom nes, snes, etc... hacks? I can imagine playing Super Mario Oddysey on tv.

I'd imagine it MIGHT be possible. After all, there's the SD slot, and you can just slap one of those cards into a card reader on your comp. But then again, who knows how they'll program their emulator. Might end up using DRM to prevent people from playing ROMs they've already downloaded illegally or something.

Probably. If they can get ROMs on then hacks should be possible. If they have a piracy prevention method in the system, someone will simply hack/mod it. It will be very unlikely that it can be done via your conventional IPS patching methods though.

Wouldn't be surprised if there's piracy protection. I'd guess that either the roms will use a different format than we're used to, or they'll block those filenames (.nes, .smc, etc.).

They wouldn't do something stupid as a filename protection, it probably uses a way diffrent file system and all. I bet that it's going to have checksum, encrypted stuff , so modifying a rom could make it refuse to start it (and probably blaming it's corrupt due to a checksum mismatch or something xD) However, I could see someone getting a 3rd party emulator to work and play whatever ROM files you want. But Nintendo could stop that with Firmware updates... |

If you can put a ROM on it, you can put a ROM hack on it. It's just a matter of breaking the encryption it's obviously going to have.

I'm doubting the ROMs will be coming out via common formats. They will probably need to be purchased through some online system through the console itself. The only chance you'll have most likely is either: a.) the expansion slot I heard someone say it has b.) modding the console and downloading the roms off a site onto the system. either way it's going to happen, so no worries. once the system is released it's only a matter of time |

I do not count on such a method happening anyway.

They are getting smarter! Everything was loosey-goosey last generation (meaning X-Box, PS2, Gamecube). People were, and still are, having a field day playing NES and surfing the net using Linux on their freakin' Xboxs. Game companies know about this now, and are doing EVERYTHING to stop it. The PSP for example has very tight security on American models. A couple days ago an exploit was found, but as soon as it came out, Sony released a system update that tightens the security even more, rendering the exploit useless. The war will rage on. We'll see what guns Nintendo has to keep ROMs off of the Revolution. Hopefully we can match 'em. =P Snika |
