What's your take on the C&D stuff? As you know, Chrono Trigger Resurrection, a project to recreate 10 scenes from the game in 3D, and Chrono Trigger Remake Project, an effort to remake the game entirely in the Unreal engine, have received Cease & Desist letters from Square Enix. How do you feel about them? The poll stats will be used in an upcoming feature on the Compendium covering these affairs. Please select one.

1. SE's being overzealous and liticious.

This is your option if you think SE's a faceless, uninformed corporation obsessed with the Final Fantasy series and harsh on fans of other franchises.

2. I don't like it, but SE is still acting in its own copyright interest fairly.

This is your game if you know well that it is in their full right to do this sort of thing, but still don't like the fact that they're intruding on honest fan efforts when the only possible loss is to FF Chronicles sales.

3. The projects should have seen it coming.

If you think that CTRP and Chrono Trigger Resurrection were bucking for a lightning bolt by remaking the game in 3D (remember CTR would only have been 10 scenes), choose this.

4. Don't care.

~

I'll be posting this around the Chrono/Square community.

they have a right to, but I dont think this would harm them at all...so I dont see why they did it...unless they are planning on doing it themselves and selling it, thats the only reason I see for them doing it...

Yeah, it's within their rights to do it, though they have to know it can't be agood PR move for them.

I think part of the problem is the way the system works, though...basically, they HAVE to go after these people, because if they don't, it'll be used as precedent if any more unsavory types try to use the characters or what-have-you.

just think about all the other remakes of other games, they use the same basic story, and characters, but not the original art that the company made, I just think square enix isnt done with chrono trigger and they just dont want anyone using it until they are all done with it,

Actually, in some cases, if you don't protect your copyright in this kind of a thing, you can actually lose it.

They have the right to do it and my guess is that they probably have plans for the franchise if they're doing so.

I don't want to see how agressive Nintendo will get with rom sites once it's time for Revolution to be released... :\

Basically what most people said, even though I personally didn't WANT this to happen, it did, and you can't really do anything about it.

Really, it wasn't going to eat into profits. Just like ROMs of SNES and NES and N64 games. It really isn't hurting anyone. If anyone argues this fact, then they are idiots. S-E is making no profit from the Chrono game series anymore. Maybe a few hundred thousand a year in sales. Probably even less. A lot less. Either way, how were two free-ware games that were being independentally developed on someone's own dime that were never going to be for sale and were effectively just "gee, look at what I can do" projects hurting S-E's profits? If they were taking Chrono Break, or whatever the new one is going to be called and stealing it and selling it as their own. Then I'd have a problem, just like people who steal modern titles on the consoles and make pirates. I mean, sure the companies are doing consumer gouging with those ridiculous prices...But still, how are fan projects hurting anyone. It is hardly even treading onto copy-right problems.

It's just a bunch of greedy old suits sitting on their fat asses in Tokyo trying to hurt gamers so that they can go out and get some new geishas to serve them tea. Or gold plating their dicks. I don't know, but it is more proof that game companies care about you as much as I care about the happenings in the country of Moldova. Which is astronomically little.

Oh, and Kles. No you can't. I had to do a big ol' project on copyright law this year, and trust me...You can't lose your copyright over this, especially when the "offending" party is fucking acknowledging your license.

No, they don't have to. If they HAD to there would be millions of nerds bankrupt for using the words Tarrasque, Cthulhu and Orc. I mean, hell, what if those unsavory types that made that wretched movie Troy touched the Illiad by Homer...Oh. Wait.

But they don't like it.

Hey, that's basically Nintendo's arguement on Emulation.

You know, I should probably sue you for the use of an idea I have copyrighted (that's right, Ziff holds a patent, but fuck you if you want to find out what it is ).

The fact is is that if they don't want to alienate fans then they shouldn't be doing things that hurt their fan base when its not hurting them.

The problem with the "emulation doesn't hurt sales" argument is thanks to Revolution, it's no longer true.

Really, even though it is the right thing to do I still don't like it. Unless they plan to either license the game or make their own 3D remake, that is...

You forgot the "They knew it was coming and everything worked out exactly as planned" option. Although, I suppose unlike Square-Enix, they wouldn't have been able to get away with admitting all their work was a bid for attention. Square-Enix can tell everyone that their FF7 PS3 tech demo does not mean they are remaking FF7, but people will either refuse to believe them, or "know" they are hiding the truth. Yeah, they already have it completed and slated to release at the same time as the Advent Children movie. Coincidentally, that will be the same day that Duke Nukem Forever is released.
