| I don't know why, but after I did the windows update thing my computer is messed up terribley. It only works for about 15 minutes then freezes up. Then When I turn it back on it wont work. I have to let it rest or something for about half hour or more before I restart it cause it won't work otherwise. ANyone know how to undo this update or fix it so my computer won't freeze up anymore? It is really annoying. | |||

| It sounds like it might be overheating, which probably isn't update-related. Install another fan if possible (can't hurt to have an extra fan or two, even if it doesn't solve the problem), and see if you can find a program to monitor your CPU temperature (note if the temp seems high around the time it crashes). What happens when you try to start up again, anyway? | |||

| Well, I dont think it's the Fan cause when I put my hand to the back of the computer I can feel the air being blown out. Plus I can hear it too. I never had any problems until I did the windows update. I've heard of that happening to a couple other people also. I don't know if it was a bogus update or if Microsoft screwed up or what. | |||

| Hmmm, it probably did. I think I recall it putting things in and deleting the old things. Then it kept giving me reminders every once in a while to resart my computer. And had a 2 minute countdown. It gave me the option to restart later. I'm not sure if I accidently clicked on the restart now button or not but it just turned off by itself. Then I couldnt get back on the computer until I waited. I tried using the "restart at last known good configuration" but that didn't seem to help. | |||

| Upgrading to service pack 2 a while back screwed up my computer and I had to reload it with service pack 1. Now I use Linux, so I don't have to worry about Microsoft's crappy service pack upgrades. Just reload your system with service pack 1. That's what I had to do... >> | |||

| WinXP SP2 should have saved your old files so you can uninstall it, check that in Add/Remove Programs. System Restore could also roll your files back to before the service pack. Note that both methods are probably more dangerous than installing SP2!! So, the only safe method would be to pop in your Windows XP CD-ROM and install it again. Also, I'd recommend slipstreaming SP2 into the CD. Installing SP2 the normal way causes way too many problems, but when it's already part of your install files, it seems to be fine: http://www.tech-recipes.com/windows_installation_tips587.html |

| Well, i tried unistalling service pack 2. But when it gets to running proccesses the computer shuts off. So apparently that part triggers that program or whatever that makes my computer shut off. | |||

Hm... It does seem like SP2 is the problem (mine won't even boot with it  ) but I just don't see how it could actually prevent the computer from starting up again.  |

| Well, I know some program is conflicting with the service pack 2. So anyone have any programs to suggest to remove the conflictin programs? cause removing the service pack aint gonna happen. I ran Registry Mechanic. But that didnt get it. But I'll try anything else. I'm tired of this shutting off on me. | |||

| Antivirus programs could be the cause too. They tend to be pretty system-dependant. Anyone know just what the problem is with StyleXP on SP2? That could be why mine wouldn't work... |

| Well, it loks like re-installing Windows must be my only option. I turned off my firewall (AVG Antivirus) but it still turns off. And if it is a failing power unit I guess I'll just have to find out when I have this repaired. Edit: For future reference, I got my computer working. I started it up in diagnostic startup. That starts only the required programs to keep the computer working. So whatever programs were conflicting with the Windows update are not on. The computer has been working for 30 minutes straight now so I'm sure I know how to keep it working. I'm eventually gonna have to get it back in Selective Startup again after I figure out what programs were giving me problems before. I got to The place where I can choose my startup options by selecting run on the Start Menu and typging msconfig. (edited by iamhiro1112 on 05-22-05 08:00 PM) |

| I do use the patch now. I used StyleXP then, though. Plus at some point I might try to make my own theme. |
