Videogaming seems like a chore these days. You have to be constantly on top of mountains of information, or get lost in the tide. Release dates are tossed around, unsettling their fans, and rumors are getting more and more believable by the day. The massive media coverage on videogames has completely taken the fun out of them.

I am going to regress to the days of my youth. I didn't have internet access back then, and gathered precious few scraps of videogaming information from the occasional gaming magazine. I went to Toys 'R' Us and poked around the videogame aisle for a good thirty minutes, and that's how I chose the games I bought, not by listening to some self-important blogger or biased website. And I had fun, I was never dissapointed or upset. It was a joy, videogames were truly great back then, and I think it has more to do with the atmosphere surrounding them than the games themselves.

So I've decided I won't be seeking information on videogames from here on out. And that's saying a lot for someone whose goal in life is the assimilation of all knowledge. I'll want to know what is available to buy, but only in general, not specific dates. I want to know when to go out hunting for something to buy, but I don't want ten thousand screenshots and three gigabytes of text explaining the technical specs of a system a year before I can actually buy it.

I want things to be simple and enjoyable again. And I invite others to do the same. Break your addiction to the media vein, to the information layline, and revert back to the honest gaming ways of your childhood. Get your info about a game from the back of the box, not from sixteen different sources on the internet.

everytime i go to buy a game, it sometimes takes me an hour or more, because I cant decide which one to buy, I always read the back, and look at the pictures and stuff...I never base my decision solely on what Ive read on the internet.

I started doing this about three years ago, ironically when I actually got the internet with unlimited access. From this I have learned that the best way to learn when games are coming out is by going to the store, hearing you guys talk, and occasionally wondering what's shaking from the guys at Penny Arcade. It's bliss!

That's what I've been doing for a long time. I don't have the money to buy every new thing that comes out, and I'm not interested in reading articles about electronics.

I didn't know the release date of the DS until weeks after it came out.

For me, it's just more enjoyable this way. If I had a lot of money I can't say it'd be the same. Recently I learned about this Yoshi game for DS from talking to someone, so I'm earning up money for that. I don't know what better things or out, and I don't care.

I don't do it to avoid "the media circus." I remember when I would read everything in Nintendo Power. I cut my subscription about two years ago because of how things changed. I don't know if the magazine changed or if I did, but it wasn't fun anymore.

It wasn't you Ashley. We were discussing this in irc last night.

Nintendo Power used to be a credible magazine despite it being officially produced by Nintendo. But over the past few years, anyone with a subscription has basically been paying Nintendo for an advertisement disguised as a magazine. It's sad, really.

And I pretty much agree with everything you said Slay. I haven't gone to Gamespot in months. I remember when a lot of the fun about being a gamer was about surprises. These days, I feel like I've practically played the fucking game already before it comes out, and then I don't feel the need to play it anymore. Not like I've been missing much because in the past year the video game industry has been lackluster. A few decent games have been squeezed out here and there but a majority of it has been complete and total SHIT.

Anyway, I'm somewhat surprised how everyone is up and arms about E3 this year. People are actually taking the time to watch press conferences and such. And with the debates going on, with all the overanalyzing of the video game world, one has to wonder what are these fanatics enjoying the most?

Playing the games or discussing them and the direction they're heading? Whatever happened to just playing the games? We have people here who go to great lengths to over complicate such a simple world. You'll note that a lot of people care more about the LOOKS of the console rather than the games.

Random Person: "Well, if Nintendo doesn't blah blah blah market status blah blah blah and Sony third party support blah blah blah...."

Me: "Hey, this game is fun!"

Yes, I don't go to video game news sites anymore because they've started to turn gaming into a laughing stock. I don't follow release dates anymore. Every Tuesday I'll go to the store (Tuesday is new game/cd/dvd day) and check to video game section to see if anything good came out, or if anything interesting is out that looks like it might be enjoyable.

I miss the days when people talked about GAMES and not hardware, companies, expos, and all that other boring garbage.

Sorry, but I tend to disagree. I like being in the know. I can't stand to not be up to date on what's going on in the world, even beyond the world of video games. I strive to be a well-rounded and knowledgable gamer-- and if everyone knows about Nintendo's new system or something, and I don't because I didn't simply check some news site, then I feel kind of left out.

That reminds me of when Nintendo Power first started putting those ads in. Not long after that happened, they printed a letter they received by someone praising them for putting in the ads. I forgot what he admired exactly, but Nintendo responded saying they're good and they don't take away the amount of pages that make up the magazine. They may also have said more will be coming. I have all the magazines saved, if I knew when that happened I could find the exact letter myself.
They kept their word, hah.

You're blinded by "anti-review omfg dude i r l337". This statement is wrong no matter how you put it. The best and easiest way to learn when games are coming _out_ is on the internet.

Unless by best you meant something else.

Also, this implying that all reviews of games suck. Which is untrue.

Although, a lot do. Gamespy/Gamespot = suck. Except for movies. Can't go wrong with movies.

I take game reviews for what they're worth, which is pretty much nothing. I'll go to Gamefaqs, look at the reviews and get a somewhat good idea of how the game is going to be.

If there's about 50 reviews that are mostly 9s and 10s, then I can pretty much be safe in assuming the game is going to be good.

Same goes for if the game is getting shitty reviews, majority wise.

If it's a good mix, which tends to be the case for a lot of games I'm interested in, then I really just brush it off and decide for myself.

I typically tend to read reviews after I've played the game though, just to see what others thought.

I go with the stuff I always do. Blind allegience to the classic Nintendo and Sega games. I call the bad ones when I play them, and the good ones when I find them. I check on them via the internet... but I -hate- gamespot and IGN, the ad-covered headache from hell. Really, I just look to find out what games are coming out, what to look for, and how to avoid using those terribly eye-painful sites.

I think Nintendo Power jumped the shark, so to speak, when the ads went in. But during the NES/SNES eras... Oh man. At least then they weren't afraid to say "this is a good game" and "this isn't".

I think it's GOOD to have various sources reporting on the quality of games (magazine/web reviews, user reviews, message boards, etc.) although the final decision, of course, always rests on the shoulders of the gamer. But it's nice to at least read up on a game and see if it's the type of RPG/FPS/etc. that appeals to you instead of regretting your purchase - which I'm sure has happened to ALL of us over the years.

I like to keep up on games from a couple of forums and from my one game magazine, Game Informer. I enjoy hearing about games I'm interested in and seeing how they develope (like RE4, when back in the day it was gonna be set in some futuristic lab and what not, but that didn't happen, and the game was still increadbile). I find a lot of the editorials in GI really good and entertaining, and they've started monthly comentaries on different aspects of the gaming industry and long interviews with big (and sometimes small) players in videogames. Though not all of their reviews are that good, I find that there are a handful of reviewers (like Reiner) that I can always trust. Basicaly, you find the people in gaming magazines that have the same preferences as yourself and go with them. This might take awhile, but eventually you'll find someone that reviews games perfectly to how you view games. Also, whenever I go to buy a game, I usually go with the intention of picking up a game, and end up spending at least a half an hour deciding between that one game and five others, almost always going with one of the other games. And occasionaly, well, actually, frequently, I find myself at the mall or bestbuy and just decide to buy a game, but that only happens when i got extra cash on me, and that's not too often.
