| Well, the title says it all. WinXP on this computer automatically restarts without any shutdown screens or anything, just goes POOF! when I try to open IE outside of Safe mode. I could really use some help here. any suggestions on how to fix this? My parents trust me to take care of our house computers, but I can't do much when Norton is not being updated. Could anyone help here, because this is a major problem. MSN messenger seems to work fine for my brother, though. | |||

| There are a few options you can do in no particular order: 1. Try reinstalling Windows. 2. Try reinstalling IE 3. Use FireFox 4. Switch to Linux |

In Linux you don't need to solve probles by reinstalling the whole thing. Things are more stable in Linux, but it's harder to get everything right...  Tried System restore? It can be a faulty plugin or some spyware/virus that is causing IE to go "poof". Can you look around on the files through "My computer"? Becuse if you can, IE is not fully broken. (yes, Windows does use IE as a file browser too...) Check for Ad-aware, use another browser such as Firefox or Opera to download it if you can't just IE. Hell, download Firefox/Opera/Whatever from another computer if you have problems. |

One thing to consider is to go into Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Startup and Recovery Settings and turn off Automatically Restart, so you can actually see the error message. Frankly I don't know why they even put such a stupid option in there, it only makes it so that you can't tell what's wrong when Windows won't boot.  |

| HH: I have it set to reboot. I still get the BSOD, get to see the error message. After about 5-10 seconds, the BSOD times out and it reboots. If I'm here when it happens, I see why. If not, I don't care anyway. And besides, I haven't had a problem in a while, my last reboot was automatic when lightning hit and the surge rebooted my PC automatically. I hate to think what would have happened if I didn't have an APC UPS on both of my PCs (mine and my parents'). My company truck got hit, over $3600 in damage! Even if you restored it, the virus is probably still there. Go to here, scan, then download and use Firefox to prevent viruses from automatically executing in Internet Exploder. |

BSOD = Blue Screen Of Death. It basically tells you what screwed up. XP is set by default not to show them, though. But like Yiffy Kitten said sometimes it still shows them for a few seconds before it restarts.  Both mine and the school's will show it for about half a second. |

| A good idea would be reinstalling IE, since it likely got corrupted somehow (or, as previously stated, some nasty trojan/virus/worm/(spy/ad)ware/hijack got in there and fucked it up)... I'd just recommend reinstalling IE and using some small defense program (like, say, Teatimer (SB S&D)) or something similar, and scanning for a virus. Worst case senario you have to reinstall Windows, provided you have a key. Just a quick question, was anything going wrong before IE started crapping out on you, or did you do anything prior to it? Sometimes running some program, changing a setting, or anything can have dire effects on a computer. |

| Well I really doubt that was the problem, but try changing them back anyway. You never know what'll fix something. I just had Firefox crash and it actually fixed several problems I was having with extensions. |
