You can get water to become ice. SURPRISE 8D I don't know. Fire is painful, and I'm afraid of swimming, and I hate dirt under my nails, and windy days suck. But water and air are nice for like.. living and stuff. Guess I'll pick water. Why is it always fire, earth, water, and wind? Where did these choices originate from? |

Originally posted by Yoshi DudeAncient societies (the Incas, I think?) believed these were the 4 elements which were the basis of existence. I like how you overanalyzed everything. Fire is painful, you can drown, you can get dirty, and you can get blown away in a strong gust. Yet you need to drink water to remain living, you depend on fire (internal combustion engines) for transportation, if there were no Earth you wouldnt exist (forget "floating in space" bullcrap), and wind... well, it feels good on 90 |

I'd say wind but I have no real idea why. :\ Just seems to be an underappreciated (well, not in this survey...) element and I kinda like the idea of being quick as the wind. | |||

I'll have to say water, because I absolutely love rain. And it's important for other reasons that I dont think I have to consider. |

The Yoshi Dude says... Each culture seems to have come up with the ideas on their own. The modern conception of "traditional elements" most likely stem from the Greeks, who thought that all matter was comprised either of air, water, earth or fire, and that combinations of these produced all phenomenon. Air + Water = Wet Air + Fire = Dry Earth + Water = Cold Earth + Fire = Warm Here's a diagram... Okay, I was a bit off. You get the idea, though. Most of Europe (since most European languages evolved from Greek) abided by this idea until science proved otherwise. The Chinese elements are Earth, Fire, Water, Wood and Metal. They didn't realize that air existed, like most cultures back then, they thought that the sky extended infinitely, so if there's no such thing as a vaccum, there's no need to make the distinction between vaccum and air. The ancient Chinese associated the elements with the noticable planets in the sky. The ancient Japanese believed in the same elements as the Greeks, but attributed the four elements to cardinal directions and magical beasts. In general, most ancient peoples thought that human beings were created from fire. Except for Native Americans, who thought that human beings were created from mud. |
