Okay, so I'm trying to install Gentoo Linux onto my computer and for some reason it isn't registering my dvd and dvd-r drives. The system boots, but when i go to mount the drive it doesn't work, but when I use ls to view it it's right there. Has anybody else had this problem and can you help me get past it, I guess if this doesn't work I'll just stick with some other distro, but i'd really like to get gentoo on my computer.

sorry, i was being a dumbass, or at least kinda, the cd was missing the files i was looking for, i just redid teh download of the iso and it worked fine. Now i've got to find a way to edit my grub file that i set up with Ubuntu so that it'll take gentoo on the second hard disk. Right now it's only seeing the Windows XP and nothing else. I'm pretty sure this shouldn't be too dificult, i just gotta find a way to get into the file.

If you can only get into Windows, you could try searching for filesystem drivers for whatever system you used. Most have some sort of write capability, though somewhat dangerous (so you often need to enable it first). Ext2fsd is good for ext2/ext3.
