We only celebrate it because it's just there.. Just like we celebrate when our favorite team wins a major league game, ya know.

That too, but the hangover shouldn't be celebrated. Well, I'm too young to drink, so oh well. Anyway, I don't think that Cinco De Mayo is Mexico's independence day either. Here is a link with more info: http://www.mexonline.com/cinco.htm |

Nice link. CONNECTION REFUSED! Cinco De Mayo sounds like a drug tradition. |

It's the same answer as the answer to "why do Americans celebrate St Patricks day?" Well, both because many Americans can trace their families back to Ireland, and it's a bloody good excuse to get plastered |

...isn't the weekends good enough for being drunk? Not like I ever get really drunk, maybe tipsy once a year or so. ...your Americans have really odd holidays. |

It is primarily a regional holiday celebrated in the Mexican state capital city of Puebla and throughout the state of Puebla, with some recognition in other parts of the Mexico, and especially in U.S. cities with a significant Mexican population. It is not, as many people think, Mexico's Independence Day, which is actually September 16. Well, yeah, but alcohol, as we all know, uber alles. (I blame Corona.) |

Yeah... it's barely celebrated in Mexico. It's just been commercialized.

Originally posted by NSNick, Rogue Jedi Explain to me how American's need an excuse to consume alcohol. Teenagers drink it without care, adults (18-20) drink it out of angst (most of them anyway), and those that do legally drink it for shits and giggles anyway. Your argument fails. |

That arguement could go for anything. Why do people who arent religious or not Christian celebrate Christmas or Easter or anything like that? It's a holiday. That's what you do, you celebrate. But I dont see how getting drunk is the way to celebrate. |

Yeah, as stated, outside of Pueblo, Cinco de Mayo isn't really celebrated in Mexico. It's celebrated here because of the chicano movement in the 70's... I'm not sure why exactly, we just sort of randomly picked this Mexican holiday. Cinco de Mayo is catchy. |
