How about adding a number format function? It keeps things way cleaner and helps view numbers easier. I did this on my board and I am pretty happy about it. What do you guys think? And yes I am that fucking lazy for people who are gonna say "Just add a comma in your imagination." |

What do you actually mean by number format function? A description of what it actually does might be wise. Although, from your example, it sounds like it adds commas to the numbers. Seems rather pointless really.

not to mention that it would make strings of numbers that don't require commas innacurate, if i understand what you propose as dan suggests. personally i think it would do more harm than good.

Thats why you set it up on things that you want commas with. But if you dont wanna have correct number formats whatever. I thought it was a pretty cool idea. Because reading the views right now just....hurts? I mean I can tell the number it would just be easier with commas and shit.

oh okay, i understand what you mean now. for whatever reason i took what you said to mean a blanket number formatting function that would cover all numbers. and yah.. in the case of the views, i guess it wouldn't hurt, in the least.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but, isn't there already a function built into PHP that handles this?

Easy to do, and not a bad idea, but it wouldn't have much use except for the view count ... or maybe EXP Then again, I don't have any trouble reading even 8-digit numbers, so |

I agree. 11384840 is just a bunch of numbers to me, but 11,384,840 I can actually read.

I don't really like commas in numbers on computers for some reason...I think "2,500" looks uglier than just "2500" I guess. Also, the comma is used as a decimal point in some languages, which could be confusing for some people. |

Well from what I can see I would believe that most people hear speak english and know the number format with commas. And even so make them be able to choose it. No number format, commas, decimals.

But, English may not be everyone's native language, and a lot of people who were raised learning another language still think of numbers being in the formet of that language. There's also a problem with the date formats. Take the date 03-04-05. What date is that? It could be any one of the following: March 4, 2005 April 3, 2005 April 5, 2003 On this board, it's the first one. But at first glance, someone could think it was the second or third. Which is why board32 uses the format "Mar 4 2005" instead. It's totally unambiguous; there's nothing it could be other than March 4, 2005. (edited by Banedon on 05-13-05 10:20 AM) |

I agree with the date thing as well. And apply it to all of them, not just the one at the top. Originally posted by Randy53215 Hell, just let them specify whatever single character they want for the separator. If you don't want one, don't put anything in. |

Exactly what HyperHacker and I said. I think it will make things more "conveineint" for the members.

Hm, speaking of numbers, maybe we should just switch everyone from the 'regular' thread layout to the text one... Seems only 94 people are actually using text. That's a lot of people who can't see anything. |
