Hello!
I'm making a new GFX-only hack. This time I'm trying to make Shinobi for the NES look like the visually superior Master System version. The game will be in Black and White and all I have now is a "before and after" screenshot of the Title Screen, take a look:

I fail to see how you are going to make something with 16 colors better with only 3 colors.

Honestly, your best bet would be to create a custom black and white palette and intregrate the palettes together to give the illusion of 12 color objects (more like 8 with proper mixing).

Thanks for the comments. Bit Blade, I never said that the hacked game will look better than the original - it will just be closer than the Master System version of Shinobi. I have no idea of how to integrate palettes, so I will continue to make my 3-shades of gray alterations. =)

By the way, another screenshot:

Aside from the grayscale "problem", that's quite an improvement.

I guess you can make multiple shades of grey by leaving everything in color, but making a tpl that changes them to various shades of grey. The screens look great, but I'm not wild about the whole game being b & w.

I like the black in white look, it gives it an old ninja flick look. I remeber Macbee doing this with SMB1.

I also like it in B&W. I don't know why, but it looks better than color in this case

That's not what I meant.

It just seems like those graphics wouldn't fit being in color. :\

I agree about the B/W look; a custom palette with 50 shades of gray would make this fantastic.

Hmm. I could create a custom palette, but the characters wouldn't be more detailed - NES sprites can have a maximum of 3 colors. The custom palette would be nice just to make the backgrounds and characters with different shades. I will think about it. Thanks for the idea. I will post new screens soon.

I recommend against using a custom black and white palette. Making a palette to compliment the game is one thing -- making a palette manditory for the game is something else entirely.

Building a completely custom palette in this method is "cheating" for lack of a better term. Doing an NES palette hack would mean you'd have to use the NES palette. Not a fabricated palette which wouldn't represent the NES in any way whatsoever.

Not to mention game specific .pal file association isn't supported by every emu -- which would either make your hack look terrible in those emus -- or forcing the user to change their loaded palette manually every time they want to play your hack (and change back when they're done) -- if they can even change their palette at all.

So yeah -- this is a bad idea. Don't do it. If you really want to stick with the whole greyscale idea -- do it right. Use the grey colors in the real palette (all 8 of them).

Yes sir, I will do it right...

To the people unfamiliar with the Master System graphics (I forgot SMS wasn't popular in the USA) here is a screenshot:

If you want to be even leeter, you might be able to do some major ASM hacks and overlay sprites on top of the background to allow 7 colors total!
Tecmo did this with their bunny logo.

I don't know if macbee knows ASM, actually. :\

And, the amount of color used in the SMS would be too much for the NES if not converted to grayscale. (I'm sure you already knew that... but... )

Dwedit... wouldn't it be 6? (The 1st color of a palette, afaik, is transparent.)

which is why it would be 7

3 colors on 2 palettes each = 6, plus the background color = 7

Hmm.. It sounds so cool, but I have no ASM knowledge. I am not a real ROM hacker, I just like to change graphics. I'm a ROM modifier, or a hacking fraud if you prefer

And, with seven colors, I would probably send the grayscale plan away...

As far as I'm concerned an extremely well done GFX hack can stand on it's own. One of my most well recieved hacks was GFX only.
