Most definately SMB3. SMW is good, but SMB3 has all those cool items and the Doomships. Plus, the music is awesome.

No. The music is limited by what they had at the time, and it loops entirely too quickly. In short, it's rather annoying to listen to after awhile. Overall, the level design was inferior to SMW, and while the items and such were cool, they don't make up for that.

The enemies... Super Mario Bros. 3 had cool regular, squishable Goombas. Super Mario World had mutant stupid rollable Goombas. Super Mario Bros. 3 had normal Piranha plants, and the fire variation to that normal Piranha plant. Super Mario Bros. 3 had normal Hammer Brothers, as well as interesting variations. Super Mario World has the stupid jumping ones. Super Mario World does not have normal Hammer Brothers, and the one variation is suck to the maximum. Super Mario Bros. 3 had cool enemies like Chain Chomp, Nippers, Buster, and others. Super Mario World had mundane enemies like Dino Rhino, Rex, Chuck, and others.

And dare I say, with what they had, that no, Super Mario World has worse graphics than Super Mario Bros. 3. Or more to the point, they didn't try as hard to add the little touches. Remember that snow-capped 1-up mushroom in 6-3 in Super Mario Bros. 3? The spooky grey Boom Boom in the desert? Those little unique touches in Super Mario Bros. 3, completely absent from Super Mario World. How's that an improvement?

Better level design... Super Mario Bros. 3. If you discount the different backgrounds and palettes, the Super Mario World levels are much similar to one another than the Super Mario Bros. 3 levels, where most of them feel so different from one another, even if they share a lot of the same graphics. Super Mario Bros. 3 had plains, hills, underground, desert, underwater, Boss Bass, stakin' on ice, sewers, Mucher field, literal pipe maze, Piranha Plant haven, and even better Piranha Plant haven... Super Mario World had plains. And more plains. And yet even more plains. And a few other levels, but all in all, certainly less variety from level to level, and for the most part, worse level design period. Super Mario Bros. 3 level 7-8 is just absolute almost perfection. Nothing in Super Mario World can touch that.

At least around here, though, Super Mario World seems far more popular. I don't think it's really fair. I think it's part Lunar Magic, and part the "better graphics automatically mean better game" attitude. A shame, really.

SMB3. More items, better levels, better secrets, and it didn't have that damned cape. God, I hate that thing.

It had the same melody. The rhythm was very different.

Meh. The levels, in general, were too short in SMB3, and just dull in general. Perhaps it's that I've had SMB3 for as long as I can remember and have been playing SMW for a much, MUCH shorter time, but SMB3 has grown dull and just isn't as fun to play.

Hey, the NES is WAY better than the SNES, people... Has a more classic feel to it. SMB3 wins over SMW any day, especially by music. There were only a few bad things about SMB3, one of which was the rarity of Hammer Suits... I tell you, if there were more of those things in that game I'd go to town!

Besides, I think it's more fair to compare SMW with the Super Mario All Stars version of SMB3.

Super Mario World is better in my opinion. Super Mario Bros. 3 levels were too short, and they didn't have Yoshi. Super Mario World had cool level designs, and you could use Yoshi in them. Anyway, Super Mario World was my first game ever, so I think that gives it more points.

Shit, I accidently hit SMB3! It must be the fanboy syndrome I mean, SMB3 is usually considered better... but I dunno why.

SMB3 is WAY too easy. SMW levels at least make you think sometimes. The music in both isn't that great, so I won't compare there... SMB3 has better items, but SMW has more creativity, I think. It's close, but SMW gets my nod... but somehow SMB3 got my vote

The reason SMB3's levels are shorter is because there isn't a save option. If they were longer, it would take a ridiculously long time to beat the game.

I like the music in SMW (especially the castle), but SMB3 music seems more... happy.

SMB3, definitively.
I needed one month to finish SMB3, as it was my third game ever.
SMW needed three days to finish (of course not finding all the exits when playing the first time ), okay, I got some more experience in gaming,

Especially I like the "Ahtletic" music from SMB3, which is played the first time in 1-2, along with some awesome map themes (World 1,3,4,5 and 6) or the beautiful theme when finishing the game
SMB3 simply brought a lot more ideas into the series than SMW. P-switches got introduced in SMB3, the same thing with bonus games - ignoring the bonus game in SMB2.

And, hey, the scrolling feature in SMB3 was even superior than in SMW. When you run and jump in a level (SMB3), which has a height of more than one screen, the screen already moves when you jump and move slowly.
In SMW you have to run and jump or fly to have the screen moved. When standing half between two screen borders, a small jump doesn't raise the screen; or you have to be on a (blue) Yoshi with a blue shell inside his mouth.

In a SMW hack someone hacked the game to enable the same multidirection scrolling feature. I think it was one of Anikiti's hacks, but are not sure

There's a few levels in Worlds 6-8 I'd like to show you... hell, there's one in World 6 that I STILL can't beat.

It wasn't until Forest of Illusion that I had minor difficulties in SMW. I was 7 or 8 at the time, and my timing was not good. Still, I cleared Butter Bridge without much trouble, despite that bad timing. SMB3, however, started giving me slight difficulties in World 2, even more in World 3 (3-5 is still pretty hard), and it took a lot of practice to beat World 4.

But, perhaps I'm just better at different parts of Mario games than you are. That would explain why you think SMB3 is too easy, while there's numerous levels that give me trouble and one that I've never beaten - yet I've cleared every single level, and gotten every exit in SMW.

Oh, and while I started playing SMB3 before SMW, I didn't play it very often until I got SMAS, which was after SMW.

Wow, that's interesting. I'm not sure that the games are THAT much different... I mean, not beating every level in SMB3 but being able to clear everything in SMW... I don't think it's coordination. Yea, I'm really not sure what it is. Surprisingly, the Mario game I have never 100% cleared was Yoshi's Island... I still have yet to get a score of 100 on one of the levels... the Transforming bonus level I think (not sure if that's only available in SMA3 though). I found coordination to be more necessary for SMW than I did for SMB3. But what levels are you having trouble with in worlds 6-8? Maybe that would help us find the differences between us.

Getting lost in Minifortress in 8, after numbered level 2, and I forget what it was in world 6. Icy cave level, a lot of jumping around, I get lost...

Then there's getting lost in some world 7 levels. Wait. I think I just saw the problem. =/

That just means you haven't explored the levels enough And that you can't remember what the hell you were doing in the levels to begin with... or something.

Wait, you can't beat that fortress in world 8? So you've never actually beaten SMB3 and seen the ending? Or do you just save clouds for that point?

6-5, right? See what you do is you get raccoon Mario and you go right until you get to the "stairway" area. Grab the koopa shell and fly up the left hole to the left of that area and use it to break through the area there. the exit's right through there.

Ooh, I hated that level. The koopa always came out of his shell before I reached the top. That, or I missed with the shell. I had to resort to P-Wings.

Whatever the case may be, the levels that were named "Radical" or "Super" or whatever in SMW were WAY harder to go and beat than any level in SMB3, in my opinion. They were pretty easy if you were cheap and floated over the whole level with a cape, but otherwise they were really hard for me.

Ah, Special World... yeah, a few of those were hard... fucking HATE Tubular! HATEHATEHATE!

Erm.

Overall, though, excluding individual levels, I just found SMB3 to be a little harder, a little more interesting, and a bit more Mario-like. WTF were they thinking, turning goombas into mutant apples?

Kyouji: That sounds like the right level... thanks.
