Say, all posts whose last reply was three months ago (or some other length of time) should close automatically. This would: -stop all disruptions made by newbies who bump up year-old threads -give the moderators one less thing to worry about (don't need to close old bumped up posts b/c it's done automatically) No chance of this happening, but... |

I've posted about this twice now, and still nothing. This was over the course of about one year's time. Hasn't happened yet, and I don't expect it to ever happen...

What about data threads in ROM Hacking? Or old threads in Final Fantasy/SMB forums? Data threads are better kept to one thread for a game rather than making new threads every time new data is found (in my opinion, but hey, what do I know?), and FF/SMB forums are quite inactive, to the point where a three-month bump isn't really that bad there. Besides, if the newbies aren't gonna read the rules about bumping, there's other rules they won't read about either, so this wouldn't help with the 'disruptions', really. |

I don't think that is useful. It might be better to invent something similar to a Mod Control Panel like in phpBBs. There you can enter the ModCP, which allows you to manage several topics at once, like closing them. Simply mark the checkboxes on each page, press the button to instantly open/close/move or trash them, thus saving a lot of time, if spammers might want to bump dozens of uber-old threads. |

I really don't see a need for this. The number of bumped threads come up once in a blue moon. Usually, someone will admonish them and move on. If they do it too much, that is what the staff is for

This is a good thought but it would not work out. a lot topics closed were bumped topics. If this idea was put into use, what would the staff do? Maybe it would be a better idea to have like a warning when you try to post in a very old thread that says "are you sure you want to post in a _ month old thread?"

There's no real point in something like this. If there was an instance where something really needed to be bumped for a purpose, this would get in the way of that. And so what if a topic isn't necessarily closed after being opened for so long. If a thread gets bumped for inappropriate reasons, actions will be taken by staff to rectify it. Personally, I couldn't care less if a topic was bumped without decent reason...but if a person is being a dumbass then it actually gives our job a purpose every once in a while. It's really not that much off my own back to go out of my way in about one or two minutes to close a thread. Implementing something like this is really wasted on something like that, especially in the case that some bumps are necessary.

So if you found this topic so useless, shouldn't you have closed it by now? I mean, I certainly found it as useless as you... but by NOT closing it, you are only helping his weak points out |

Because I'm not the end-all, be-all of the board and they might have something to say in return maybe? Like every other thread? And didn't I already mention that all threads don't have to be closed after a set time? Only reason I would close threads would be at the request of the author or if a topic got out of hand. If I were to close a thread not under those two, it would be under the fact that there really -ISN'T- any point of a thread going on; the thread has no way of progressing any further, and it would probably only be in this forum, actually. But the thread isn't dead by any means at this time. |

The old thread might contain solutions which didn't help but the bumper tried already, now asking what options are left. I was a moderator in another forum and didn't close topics if not really needed, too - except it went off for spamming, the creator got banned or somethingt similar. |

One thing; there shouldn't be anything wrong with bumping threads. As long as there isn't any spam put into the thread in the bump, bumping them shouldn't be against the rules. Bumping > starting a new thread. (edited by Narf Vader on 05-04-05 03:21 PM) |

It is annoying when someone bumps a 4-month-old thread and you see posts you don't remember making and people who left ages ago. Not really horrible though. Auto-closing threads wouldn't work so well though, because some forums' bump tolerance is higher than others, and in some cases there might be a good reason. For example, like Surlent said, someone might want to reply to a thread in HW/SW about a problem they're having rather than starting another thread about it. (Hence why I usually leave those open.) Or of course, ROM Hacking threads with good info might stand to be bumped if someone has an addition or correction rather than trying to copy all the information into a new thread or just plain ignoring it. And a month's bump in a less active forum like Super Mario isn't really a bad thing, whereas in say General Chat you'd probably get yelled at. I do like the warning idea though. Just stick a little warning at the top of the new reply page if the thread is old. (Or at the very least, change the post dates to show how long ago a post was made, like "Posted on 31/11/1958 (4 score and 7 years ago)" or something along those lines.) I actually wondered why something like this wasn't implemented, myself. Having read the replies in this thread, however, I can see now why it might not be such a fabulous idea. Still... maybe it could be implemented in only some of the forums? (I'm not sure if forum specific code like this is possible or not.) |
