| Uh... Okay, I wanted to register a site (mysitename).com, and I was wondering where the easiest place to do it, and cheapest prices were. I'm not too savy on this sort of thing, and I'm not really so sure what's involved. However, so far I have found... www.godaddy.com - $8.95 a year, but I have a coupon code for a dollar off. http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/ - $9.95 a year http://domainsarefree.com/ - $3.99 a year Also, I'm confused about hosting. I've only ever used services like Angelfire where I upload my files through the web-shell via my browser, and occasionally I've used WS_FTP. Where do I get hosting? Do I need it with my domain name? Where can I get hosting the cheapest? Will any hosting work with my domain name?  If someone could help me, that'd be awesome. |

| the purpose of a domain name is to allow people to get to your site using words instead of a series of numbers between 0-255. Therefore, if you register a domain name, you probably can't use free hosting sites like angelfire and geocities because those places have their own IP address(es). hosting is basically a computer with a globally known, unique IP address that people can find your website. If you use angelfire or geocities, you are using their IP address to allow people to find you. To be able to put stuff on their computers, they both provide a web interface and FTP interface to give you a way to pretend you are at the computer they are storing your files on. If you connect to the Internet, you have an IP address. As a result, it is possible for you to provide hosting on your own computer by installing web serving software like Apache. If you do not get a lot of traffic, that is probably the cheapest way to go. |

| Thanks for the response.I know I can't use something like angelfire, but I can't host it off of my own computer either. I'm not sure how much traffic I'm going to get, so I'd rather play it safe. Once I've got the domain, is there an inexpensive (free) or easy way I can get a web hosting provider to park my downloads and stuff on? Maybe one where I can just use FTP? |

| Some hostings services will provide the domain registration for you, provided it hasn't been taken (I know my cousin did this, since he knows absoloute shit about webpages) Usually they'll say that in the plans for hosting, so eh. |

| I'll offer a word of advice -- shop around, and shop around GOOD for a domain registrar. Some domain registrars have been known to steal domains, allow them to be stolen easily by others, etc. Make sure you pick a good domain registrar! I've had a domain stolen from me before, and there's fuck all I was able to do about it... I go with directNIC who aren't all that bad, but probably not the cheapest either. I've been with them for over two years, and haven't had any problems. |

| EasyDNS will let you point your domain name to ANY url. This includes geocities and angelfire. |
