I usually had one or two stars in reserve which I used in the Piranha Plant levels to have an easy start in there

The first mini-fortress drove me really crazy until I found the exit ("WTF, no enemies ?) - and the auto-scrolling water levels was simply a pain in the ass for someone, who had his NES and his third game ever - without a Frog Suit I lost a lot of lives until I came out alive that :O

Dude, you can't just, move fast enough to get all the stars and beat the levels? You had to find cheapass tricks? You should REALLY try beating it without the tricks sometime. It is much more enjoyable than waiting around for all the guys to die...

Errr, Kefka, of which level are you speaking ?
There were two piranha plant levels which replaced the hammer brothers in world 7, then was a regular level which had a never-ending row of munchers and a few stars.

That regular level was very easy, since it was mostly trial and error and didn't involve jumping over gaps and such.
In my one, short and anyway discontinued hack I remade a level like that: "Six Stars of Fate" - and that included six stars and tons of munchers, huge gaps, jumping between both screens in heigt, fences and other nice things - This added with no midway point and swim passage in the end - most people couldn't get past it without save states

Ah, the "Six stars of Fate" level was easy to get past for me. I knew the level as I knew my own pocket.

Wait a sec, I thought you were talking about the REAL level in the Pipe Maze.

"then was a regular level which had a never-ending row of munchers and a few stars."

I meant that one was easy.

http://mitglied.lycos.de/mithrandir21/forgotten.zip includes that IPS patch of that hack
Five levels, crappy ExGFX backgrounds, way too hard levels - and only one message box. Bleh, it was longer ago I messed with it, but for testing purposes. you may try it

It's the fourth level, already the first part in the ghost house needs some (probably well-known) trick to get through. There is a huge gap and two ghosts ... how to get past that

Kuriboh's shoe is awesome. Too bad it doesn't last that long. World 5 is also the only world you can get Tanooki (I could be wrong).

Why is there a hack in the Super Mario Series area?

Big Island. I just really like the fact that the enemies are almost bigger than Mario!

Yeah, wrong. You can get one at the start of Big Island (Wasn't it Giant Land?) using a hammer to break the rock just to the left of level one.

I voted for Big Island... only 'cause I can't stand Pipe Land. God it's so freak'n hard! Can't let that world win. My favorite world would have to be Sky Land though. Good ol' shoe and suit there. A few nifty secret areas only findable through intensive flying that lead to nowhere, too!

**EDIT**

Hmm... I've never classed Sky Land to be made of two parts. Sure you teleport to a new map, but it's just a different method other than scrolling the map across... which you see right from Desert Land.

It's all one world, damnit!!
You don't call the different sections of Desert Land "Desert Land a, b and c"
More-so bringing up Dark Land. That's not in sections. *Crosses arms*

World 5 does have some cool secrets. I didn't know about the one in 5-1 for a while. Only when I got the Super Mario All-Stars Player's Guide (which I can't fiind) did I learn about it.

That pirahna plant level was NOT hard. If you mean that one with the invincibility stars.

It was fun.

The one with the stars was easier than the no-numbered levels because stars always ran out on them. I died so many times there...

One of my favorite levels in World 4 is the one where any door takes you to a smaller mirror level and vice versa.

It's a cool concept. I actually designed a level for YIWT based on it, except with upside-down/normal replacing big/small.

Big Island had some very creative levels, such as the rising/falling lake and that cool cave.

I never got a Hammer suit (or any other suit) to last that long, so I never got to try it. Bowser was pretty easy. I don't think I've ever died to him.

Weren't there Mushroom Houses in Pipe Land that could give you Tanooki and/or Hammer suits?

Anyway, Both Big Land and the Pipe Land rocked.
