This is a redraw of a VERY old pic I did, that I never finished.

The original was drawn in 2001, and I was danged proud of it, despite the fact that I never worked out how to draw the feet in (or what she should even have on her feet, for that matter). Because of the feet, I never finished it.

This redraw was done this weekend, whilst feeling kinda sick (I have come down with a rather nasty cold, and was very out of it all long-weekend... still sniffly now), when I happened to find the original on my hard drive. I'd always intended to finish it some day, although it turned out that I wound up redrawing it.

Anyways, here it is.

Click on it to see it bigger.

I can still see a few things I need to improve in this, but frankly I think it is a VAST improvement over the original....

Compare for yourself...
Overall differences between the two pictures
Detail picture at working-size (face / eyes only)

I'd like to think I have improved over the years...

I think the comparison pictures speak for themselves. But then again, it wasn't like you were ever -bad- either.

And that does look nice. The only thing I can think of is that the shadow towards the bottom, specifically the left leg, seems off in terms of global light, unless she's just hovering there and not on the ground.

The "shadow" is just me playing with background, nothing more. I just took the original pic, put it on a new layer, shaded it black and applied the "soft light" filter to it to make the background less.... dull.

Critique the artwork, not my crappy background-dullness-removal-attempts

I can't think what background to really give it, but I didn't want to just leave it white... so I just threw something crappy together so it wasn't.. well.. white... like the original (unfinished) was. I leave entirely too many backgrounds white, come to think of it. I should learn to "background". But I don't wanna, that's another 6 hours of work....

I was teasing

But yeah, as mentioned (more in the edit of above post), I'm not good at backgrounds, I just threw something together so it wasn't plain white for once...

That's one hell of an improvement.

And speaking of backgrounds, what I usually do is just pick random colors and scribble all over until there's little white left, but somehow I think that's just a littttle unprofessional.

Thanks! I thought it was too, in fact I was just about as proud of myself on completion of the linework in 2005 as I was with the original in 2001 Then I was royally pissed when my other half said he liked the 2001 one better... *mutter curse grumble swear*

I used to be a serial abuser of the "Render Clouds" and "Lens Flare" features as backgrounds of my artwork.

That is good to show are far you have come along in your artwork. I tend to like somethings better in the 2001 version than the 2005 but that's just me though.

Could you pretty please elaborate on what you like about the 2001 version better than the 2005 version?

My other half said he liked the fact that it didn't have black cartoon outlines in the old version, and that he liked the eyes better because they looked more "real". Then he asked what look it was I was going for. I said "anime" and he said "oh, your second one's better then, but I still like the lack of lines".

Alright.. let's see if I'm any good at critiquing

I like the shape of the legs better in the old one. In the 2005 version, her left calf is pretty thick, and her right leg doesn't have much visible shape to it. I'm no expert, but it looks to me like her foot is facing directly sideways or at least close to it, in which case I think you'd be able to see the curve of the front of her thigh as well as her knee sticking out a bit. Shoulders and arms definitely better in '05 version, but her elbow might be a little bit too far down her left arm, at least on the bottom side.

Those two things are about the only critiques I have at the moment. Looks very nice!

My personal critiques on this, fyi:

2005 critiques
  • The legs ARE a bit heavy-set, which I've been mostly putting down to her being "athletic", it's all uh.. muscle.. for all the uh, running and jumping.. and stuff.. she does... yeah.. I worked for a long time to try to get them more slender, but without making them too long I haven't been able to do a good job of REALISTICALLY making them more slender yet.... (and I was going for a more realistic body shape than my 2001 version)
  • Yes, that foot on the left hand side of the picture IS too flat on the ground, don't know how it worked out that way though, as it was not my intention. I think it happened while I was trying to make the boot look like a boot.
  • The hips, specifically on the left of the picture. I think the hip is too low on that side, needs to be up higher by a touch.
  • Arm on the left hand side of the picture, maybe needs to be back a touch at the elbow, otherwise is fine
  • Arm on the right hand side of the picture -- hand placement is a bit odd, seems like the thumb isn't there, need to fix this. Elbow joint itself is in the right place, but bottom of elbow is a bit too far to the left.
  • Neck is too thick, and if I make it thinner, too long.

2001 critiques
  • Body shape is unrealistic. NOBODY has Boobs, Hips, Waist, Legs or Arms like that!
  • Specifically, shoulders are too broad for hips, waist is too thin.
  • Legs are too long, shape of leg on left is just dodgy reverse of shape of leg on right. Shape is unrealistic
  • Arms have no muscle tone, or any tone at all for that matter
  • Hands on sword are backward, would be awkward and uncomfortable to really hold a sword like that
  • Sword itself sucks, but I knew that back then too, cause I never finished it...
  • Eyes do not "curve" around the face -- ie, looks too flat. Nose is too pointed, cheekbone not defined, ear too far back, mouth no more than a line. In general, features too sharp/pointed and flat
  • Neck is too thick, and if made thinner, too long
  • Shoulders are HUGE, shoulder on left too far back and too high
  • Too many folds in clothing at waist, or not enough folds elsewhere (I'm leaning though towards too many).
  • No feet.

Geeze... You've already taken out all the fun of critiqing when you've given your own critique

Yeah, you definitely improved. I'm actually amazed that you can actually improve a great art style ; Hm... I have to say I like both styles, though.. Dunno why.. they got their own charms..

Her right leg in the new one kinda bugs me... The outline just looks... weird to me.. Maybe I just need sleep..

-2001 I like the shape of the eyes much better. Seeing as it makes her look more cold and evil like an assassin in a way.
-2001's legs are thinner than the 2005 version but could be thickened up a little. Seeing as they're more shapely like a woman's leg is suppose to be like.
-2001's hair style is good but a little too flat; not seeming like it has movement at all, which is where 2005's comes in at.
-Arms are too lanky and skinny in 2001 and the elbow for 2005 is lower than should be.
-The face seems anime in both but I like the 2001 a little better. Distance-wise.The ear in 2005 is better.
-The feet/boots in the 2005 need improvement.
-The shadows in the 2005 version make it seem realistic.
-I like the kimono/dress in the 2001 version better.
-Hands better in 2005 on the sword handle and the sword is better.

Comparing both versions on what I liked and disliked about each that came to mind.

I just do it in black and white, with the occosional simple colour.

...yeah, i'm boring like that. Then, I really can't figure out GIMP. And I really don't feel like getting Photoshop. Even by illegal means...

The only thing that bugs me is the wierd shadow, it makes her to look kinda 2d-ish. It probably would have looked bettwer without the shadow. Then, Hiryuu just pointed that out... and I really hadn't played around much with Photoshop.

She looks more realistic in the newer one, mainly becuse she dosen't seem as shiny. It did look like she was made by plastic on the old one.

Yet again, very nice.
