To how many decimal places do you know Pi?
Please answer seriously.
Pi? What's that?

But seriously, I only know 3-5 of them on a good day, and knowing more won't help me get laid. Pi is just one of (uncountably) many transcendental numbers, so I don't care to memorize their digits.

I know 8 of them.
Yet, at a certain maths camp, I came to meet someone who knows slightly more than 300 of them. It's a riddle to me how someone can memorize such a long number.

I happen to be a fan of Matthew Matic's music. (A swedish maths geek.) During a period, I was listening to the ones he made that I like, over and over again while working. In one song (which mostly consists of the sentence "Who knows the most digits of Pi?", but in swedish, "Vem kan flest decimaler p

3.14...

Uhm, that's about it. It was so damn long time ago I even needed to use Pi.

The series 1 - 1/3 + 1/5 - 1/7 + ...

converges to pi/4 (uber slowly, and I mean uber)

just getting 4 digits of accuracy took over 15,000 iterations to achieve. But whenever you need a spare digit and have a few hours (possibly a lot more) to sit around, you can use this.

3.14159... and then I get stuck right there.

Funny, I used to hit the Pi button on my calculator all the time for no apparent reason.

Eh, well I think we're all better than the ancient hebrews, who insisted on just using 3 instead of even 3.14. I don't want any of them as my engineers.

Bah, who gives a shit about pi? I only know 3.14159... what I want to know is:

Who has memorized the number e? THAT's work... I only know like 2.71828 on that number. Anyone know much more of it?

You're a madman!

Myself, I only know about 12... My old Geometry teacher knew over 250, and I have a friend who can go to about 45.

And Kef, I hate e. I hate it. Do you hear me? See this? This is hate for e^(whatever). *middle finger to his math book*

Hehe, who here actually knows what the number "i" is?

i is the imaginary basis number. Together with 1 you can form a two dimensional plane, similar to the normal plane most of you draw your graphs in. The first coordinate is in real numbers, and the second coordinate consists of real numbers times i. That is the complex plane, or the number field C. Real numbers is R.

Specifically, it is adjoined as the solution of the equation x^2 + 1 = 0. In other words, it's the square root of negative one. Ignorant people will complain that i doesn't exist in the real world, but it exists in the theory of electrical engineering and quantum physics, which are real world applications, as well as fluid dynamics.

edit: btw, Grey, smallhacker was being facetious, b/c i has no decimal places, or alternatively, it's real coefficient is 1, as in 1 times i. So it would only have one significant decimal place anyways.
