Mario Journey is a hack of Super Mario Bros. 3. Inspired by Mario Adventure, I'm having fun trying to create a hack that is similar. This hack will contain brand new levels, graphics, and ASM hacks. Completely separate from Race Against Time.

Story:

The Mushroom Kingdom is at war! Bowser has sent all of his ships, tanks, and minions to attack the Mushroom Kingdom. When one of the koopa kids badly injures Luigi, Mario declares war against Bowser. All of the soldiers of the Mushroom Kingdom battle Bowser's forces, with the people supporting the troops. Mario takes this personal, and sets on an adventure to end Bowser's reign once and for all!

New Features:

- Infinite Lives (you can't get Game Over)
- Poisonous Mushroom (returning from Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels)
- 100 Coins/Star (you've seen this in the past, its present in this hack)
- Bounce Flip (when you're not little or Frog Mario, you can flip when bounce off a noteblock)

I haven't gotten around to redesigning the World 1 map yet, but I changed the ground palette to green. Also, as you can see, I blanked out the lives, since they aren't a factor anymore. I haven't figured out how to remove the x yet, but what I ultimately want to do is change that whole display around.


My style of level designing has changed. I am now making use of the pointers, which I never bothered to look at before. This will allow for more puzzles, and you will have to do more work to complete a level.


This screen just shows off some more graphics I did.

These pics show off nothing on this huge level.


The Poisonous Mushroom replaces the 1-up mushroom. I actually did this ASM hack one time, but I couldn't get it to work right. This time I figured out how to make it work.


If you are little mario and you touch it, you die. If you are any other powerup, you become little. Its done that way, because the poisonous mushroom is very fatal.


For those who follow my work in the past, you know about this one already.


100 coins gets you star power.

Before you ask, I have my reasons for closing the other thread I made yesterday. If you really want to know, PM me. Otherwise, we'll leave it at that. I don't want to make any promises, but I could have a demo ready by the end of next week. If not next week, possibly the week after. We'll see.

I feel one of the reasons my hacking doesn't go far, is because I'm too serious with it. I remember reading what DahrkDaiz said one time, if you don't have fun, it won't turn out right. So, I'm trying to follow his advice. I'm just having fun with it. Is that why we hack to begin with?

The hack does look promising. I too think it's important to have fun with your hacks. That is one of the reasons I finished my Super Mario Adventures hack. For me it was fun to see how many enemies from various Mario games I could sneak in.

You remove the x by opening the rom in the graphics editor of your choice, then blanking that tile out with the transparent color. To my knowledge, the only place that x is used is on that particular screen, so I don't forsee any problems that would create.

Of course, I only beat the SMAS version, so I may not have seen another place the NES version uses it.

I didn't want to remove the x by just blanking out the graphics. If I have to, I will, but I'm in an ASM hacking learning process. So I want to see if I can alter the code to not load certain graphics. Anyway, thats the least of my concerns right now.


I'm almost done with the World 1 map!


I'm also starting to work on the title screen graphics!

I have no intention of icing or cancelling this hack. World 1 is almost done, I have lots of time on my hands, and I feel better when it comes to hacking. I'm not all stressed out, and I'm not taking this so serious. I'm having fun with it, which is what I should do.

Seeing how World 1 is just about done, it won't be 2 weeks for the demo. In fact, it could even be this weekend!

Right now, I'm thinking of some new ASM hacks to add.

Yes, but nobody ever starts a hack with the intention of cancelling it. Unless they've suffered a concussion, perhaps.

What exactly does flipping off the blocks do anyway, just look cool?

Hmm... Maybe try replacing Raccoon Mario with Caped Mario - that is, if you think you're up to a such thing.

Otherwise, all I can think of in terms of ASM hacking is an item reserve, which DD has already done. =\

I know; the ideas are running low. Well, some things I'm considering doing:

- Making it so Tanooki Mario can't fly.

If you think about it, if you are Tanooki Mario, Raccoon Mario is obsolete, since Tanooki Mario can fly and turn into a statue. If I make it so Tanooki Mario can't fly, then Raccoon Mario has its own purpose.

Raccoon Mario - Can Fly
Tannooki Mario - Can't fly, can glide, and can become a statue

Also...

- Making more of the rare powerups come up more often.

A few of the rare powerups in the original game, such as the Hammer Suit and Tanooki Suit, don't come up as much. In this game, I'll make them come up more often.

Make it so neither of them can fly. Then disable the flutter sound when they float. Now you have bunny mario.

Nah, I'm just going to stick to the other plan. Tanooki Mario can't fly anymore, and it and Hammer Mario will pop up more often.


This will probably be the World 1 map for the demo.


Gone is the snow palette. Didn't like it too much.




I'm currently working on the dungeon. Palette subject to change.



I might release a demo within the next few days.

IMO, the snow pallete was great compared to the deep greens, but uh. just one question Irix. How many mario 3 hacks have you done now? o.o

I've been doing some graphics work.


I put in the old bushes, I shaded the status bar, and I made brand new ! blocks.


New Dungeon Blocks. It makes it look like Mario is in hell!

Heh, looks good. If you could somehow animate those dungeon blocks, it would look like Mario was in hell. Though, I don't know if you'd want to incorporate that in every level that used those blocks.

I'd like to see your notes on how to remove flight from Tanooki Mario and not Raccoon Mario. Need of Raccoon Mario when Tanooki Mario is available something I've wondered for awhile.

Tanooki Mario is like an upgrade to Raccoon Mario though. It's similar, but more powerful.

Bunny Mario would be cool though. Jump high like the frog (maybe higher), but walk and swim normally.

Chill Penguin, check the SMB3 Notes. The data is in there.

The demo is just about complete. I'm working on the ship level now.

Dungeon: Memory Cave





This reminds me a little bit of Ghouls and Ghosts and Final Fantasy.

I made this level thinking about one of the Tomb Raider levels, even though I don't care for those games anymore.

UPDATE 4/27/05

Now that World 1 is out of the way, and the demo has been released, what's next? Well, I must continue on!


Soon to be completey scrapped, the temporary title screen.


The first screenshot of World 2 Level 1! I brightened the dark blue sky palette for all the areas, and I even made new noteblock graphics!


I love the dark rich green color. It gives the game a different feel.


This picture is kind of low quality, but I will fix the green shade soon enough!


The dead end of Level 1! Apparently Bowser has sent his minions to build a secret base in the middle of the desert. Mario will deal with that!

Erm. I'd suggest putting that door on the other side of the pyramid. It looks COMPLETELY out of place where it is. I don't mind the greenish pyramid (it's a bit odd, but not bad), but with an orange door on top of the green it sorta looks.. bleh.
