... This is where "reading the thread" comes into play, because everything you'd want to know about the map is pretty much spelled out for you by doing so. |

As for the polar bears, I think that they are already allowed to cross the border, provided that they have a green card (or the Euro equivalent), picture I.D., birth certificate, and have claws that meet the EU standards (they can't be long enough to kill someone with one swipe). So, he's not really preventing them from crossing, he's just making sure that any bear walking across has some papers attached to it in some way. |

There are ways of delaying it, yes. Being a professional football player playing for some foreign club has proven very effective, but, not many people are that, huh? I don't know if you can delay it because of university, most people simply go through with it straight away, since it's only one year, and then take university afterwards. |

Originally posted by Admiral Kefbar Hm, I guess you americans aren't too familiar with the norwegian school system, so let me explain how it works first. First, there's Children's School, from the year you fill 6, to the year you fill 13. (Well, originally it was from the year you filled 7, so I only want to Children's School for 6 years. It was changed in 1997.) Then there's Youth School, from the year you fill 13 to the year you fill 16. Both Children's School and Youth School are mandatory. After Youth School, most people choose to attend Advanced School, where they may choose between a number of different courses. Most of these last 3 years. I attended General Studies, which is.. well, general studies. (Well, technically General Studies only last 2 years, but you have to take a year of "General, Economical and Administrative Studies" first. After this course, you choose whether you want to attend General Studies or Economical and Administrative Studies.) So the majority attend Advanced School from the year they fill 16 to the year they fill 19. After Advanced School, if you chose one of the courses that give the so-called "Basic Scholary Competense" (no idea what the english word is), you'll be able to attend University or the so-called "High School" (pretty much the same as College). As for me, I'll be done with Advanced School in June this year. As for internet access, no idea. We'll find out when we get there. |

Eh... If Adamant was in Sweden I'd say they'd have the broadband, but it looks like he's in dialup land at best. Everything you wanted to know about Norwegian drafting, directly from Wikipedia: Norway has mandatory military service of 18 months for men between the ages of 18 (17 with parental consent) and 42. The actual draft time is 6 months for the national guard, and 9-12 months for the regular army, air force, and navy. The remaining months are supposed to be served in annual exercises, but very few conscripts do this due to lack of funding to the Norwegian armed forces. Certain specialist training programs entail extended conscription of one to eight years. Pacifists can apply for non-military service, lasting 18 months. Women can volunteer for military service. |

Okay, several misunderstandings here. The golf stream helps in Northern Norway too. It can be cold there during the winter, but the average difference between the climate in Southern- and Northern Norway isn't that big. In 2004, the summer was hotter in the North most of the time. If the golf stream didn't exist, it would be cold in the South, and very cold in the North. I've been near the Russian border. That was four years ago, but what I remember: There was trees and hills all the way, and very few houses. I was there in autumn 2000, and it wasn't colder there than down here (I live in the south, but I've been almost everywhere in Norway). Originally posted by ColleenEverything else. Being a sparsely populated country (4.5 million people) doesn't mean that there's nothing to do here. We have everything you have in Canada, even in Northern Norway. And there is NO polar bears in Norway, Northern Norway isn't like Northern Canada. You have to visit Svalbard (an island further north up there) to see them. Originally posted by ColleenWhy do you say that? You have to search long to find someone with dialup around here (none of my friends have dialup), although they may have more of it in the North. Sweden doesn't have more technology than Norway, it's just the same thing. I don't know much about the military services, but I remember there was some echonomic chaos in the Norwegian army not too long ago. Luckily, I won't get there, because my sight is "too bad", even though I see well withouth glasses too. But still, Colleen, I suggest you buying a book about Norway. Have fun. |

First off, I said the SIBERIAN polar bears from SIBERIA. Not from Norway. And the dialup land comment was a Jesper joke - whenever Jesper heads to the country, he says that he's heading to dialup land since you can't use broadband up there. |
