Messing around with the iPod_Control directory and hex editor... I killed all my music. Using the recovery option (with GNUpod) made all my MP3s have the wrong names in the iTunesDB. So now, I've deleted my iPod_Control directory and re-made it. Now I have an iPod devoid of songs.

It's going to be fun ripping 700 songs again.

Congradulations for being a moron.

Yes, let's fuck with things that are probably important (hmm, iPod_Control sounds like a useless thing to meee!) and hope nothing goes wrong! Lolololol.

Not the smartest thing you've done so far.

I'm sorry, but I have to do this.

<Nelson_Muntz>Ha-Ha!</Nelson_Muntz>

I deleted all the songs off my iPod too, but that's cause it chose to synchronise to an empty iTunes.

Thankfully I had all my songs on a backup and it was restored within the hour.

Heh... a least the free software iPod controlling programs (GNUpod is my preferred one) don't require you to delete everything just for screwing with the system directories (I have about half a gig of data in other directories). I sort-of expected to screw up, but oh well. I've ripped my CDs once, I think I can do it again.

If it's screwed up, mind taking it apart and removing its batteries and taking pictures of its insides and uploading them before putting it back together and re-adding the songs?

Thanks

Don't worry DOS. I know someone who erased all their crap in a FAR stupider way than you.

This girl at school had heard about the whole thing where you shouldn't have magnets near the iPod. She didn't believe it, and just brushed it off as a typical rumor... so she went into the Physics teacher's room into the lab area, and actually got it by a magnet...

She lost about 2 gigs of songs... Stupid, STUPID. So really, the fact that you were messing around with it anyway and inadvertantly screwed it up isn't anywhere close to being as bad as knowing about what can fuck it up and deliberately going and doing it anyway.

Here's some stuff:
* No, I didn't know the structures, but I knew that the directory is important. I decided to re-do the whole reverse engineering thing that's already been done. Luckily, such previous reverse engineering allowed me to recreate *only* that directory, instead of reformatting it like what Apple's utility wants to do.
* Backups... hmm, you mean CD-ROMs? Most of my music is on regular audio CDs. Notice the word most
* MP3 CDs can be erased if they're on CD-RW (plus, I find CDs much more suspectable to damage when carried around than a protected hard disk)
* I want a fourth point, so I'm just saying that I bought my iPod.

I think the real morons are people like you. People who feel that tampering with something to see what happens is stupid. That's how ROM hacking started, that's how third party software for things like the DS, and console modding came to be.

Note that romhacking doesn't involve tampering with highly expensive things. Unless I'm missing a vital detail.

that's how third party software for things like the DS,
Somehow, I think that people develolping third-party software have a good bit of knowledge of HOW to develop that software

and console modding came to be.
Maybe it's just me, but I also think those guys are idiots, too. Let's toy around with the internal workings of something that costs over a hundred dollars!

Cheveyo.

Wrong. I'm talking about people who hack the wireless of the DS. It's tough stuff.

Maybe it's just me, but I also think those guys are idiots, too. Let's toy around with the internal workings of something that costs over a hundred dollars!

1) You couldn't do it. (Edit: don't get me wrong, I don't have enough knowledge to either)
2) Do you even know what they've accomplished?

Explain to me how homebrew applications/games are bad things. I'd like to hear that one.

1) Irrelevant, and a pointless personal attack.
2) Don't particularly care, as it has nothing to do with my point.

Colleen: The hell are you talking about?
