Just recently I've been having troubles with some emulators. For so long all the emulators I was using worked perfectly. The only emulators that work now are BGB for Gameboy and Gameboy Color, and No$gba for GBA.
Just so you guys know, I was using all the latest releases of the following emulators;
For NES I use JNES,
for SNES I use SNES9X,
for GBA I use VisualBoy Advance
I don't know why they won't work. All of them run when I turn the sound control off in the emulator's options but it sucks playing without sound.
When I open JNES, and a ROM, if I have the sound on, the game runs very slow, JNES says like 1.30 FPS.
When I open SNES9X and a ROM with sound on, it runs great but without sound.
When I open VisualBoy Advance and a ROM with sound on, it freezes and sometimes crashes my computer.
I have gone through a bunch of other emulators that I found on Zophars Domain. None of the DOS ones work either. If any of you can help me, please do.

If enabling sound crashes things, then yeah, you probably have sound problems. I don't think No$GBA or BGB use DirectX while most of those others probably do, so I'd look at reinstalling that first...

I get the same problem but my sound works. The jnes, I have, works only when the screen is small. So, if I make it bigger, it runs very slow. Same as the visualboy advance but this time a little different. When I run the emulator, I have to turn off the music so it doesn't go slow or skip. Some times, I have to have the automatic frame on and checked on 1 if I go higher than that it will run very fast. So every time I get a new game, I have to mess around with the emulator.

This is very offtopic, and I don't want to sound rude or anything, but this has always baffled me.

What on Earth is the appeal to JNes? Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad emulator, but it certainly doesn't stand up to FCEU, NEStopia, or any of the several awesome NES emus. It's got decent emulation (but again, not as good as the others), and it completely LACKS features.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mean to knock it. But it's like taking a taxi to work when there's a limo you can ride for free. I just never understood WHY JNes got so popular.

It's normal that a game might run slower at more (or less) than 1x size. Stretching an image takes a lot more CPU power than drawing it normally. A smart enough emulator would use normal drawing methods for 1x size and only stretch at others. (I've been working on an emulator myself, and I found a near 3x speed jump using normal drawing (BitBlt) over stretching (StretchBlt); a more complex/complete/working emulator would probably see an even bigger difference.)

I second that. The NES emu I worked on (Schpune) uses like 2-3% of my CPU when displaying in normal, unstretched mode.. but shoots up to like 50-60% when doing 2x stretching.

Anyway HH, I'll have to recommend against using StretchBlt at all (or at least, provide an option to do software stretching and BitBlt). StretchBlt is slow as all hell. You can write your own routines to stretch the image by integer scales (2x, 3x) and it'll typically be much faster.

I've considered doing that, but I'd really like it to be scalable by amounts other than 1x, 2x, 3x and so on. I'll probably end up using SDL or something though, but I need to get it actually running the damn games before I worry about speed.
