| I just recently purchased Robotech: the Macross Saga on DVD. The trouble is that it is region one, and my PC is set on playing region two DVDs. I know it's possible, and I tried altering the DVD region in the DVD Drive proprerties in Hardware Manager. Unfortunately, it say that I need an adminstator's account. I'm using XP Home, and I haven't set up any multi-user options yet, so my account should, in therory, be set to administrator, which multi-user options tells me it is. Any advice? |

| Which player/application do you use for viewing your DVDs on your PC ? Usually it should be possible to bypass the restriction of the region code on machines, since on the most stand-alone DVD players the regions are hardcoded (some DVD players can be manipulated for allowing to watch other region DVDs as well; or the dealer offers a non-restricted version for the DVD player the customer want to buy). I dunno know about Win XP, but afaik, the first user set up automatically gets administrator privileges  Or you almost could try Google using the right terms  http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&c2coff=1&q=DVD-ROM+%2B+bypassing+region-code&spell=1 |

| It would be helpful if you stated which DVD player you use, and which programs. It should be possible changing region a few times, then it's locked... Many DVD players have an region free mode hidden, like mine.  (edited by Kitten Yiffer on 03-30-04 07:24 AM) |

| It does NOT matter which app is used. You need to go ot Device Manager: DVD/CD-ROM drives, and then the corresponding drive. Kas: Have you ensured it's an admin by control panel: User accounts? You can see "Computer administrator" or "Limited." |

| In Win98 it's controlled by a DVDRegion key in the registry. It's probably the same in XP, but the key's been moved/renamed. | |||

| Get DVDRegionFree. It loads when your favorite DVD watching app starts, and tells the Region check to forget about any possible mismatch, because they are just fine. *waves his hand, Ben Kenobi-like* | |||

| Ok, I've managed to get XP's device manager to let me change regions after a re-format. Things are now working great... Apparently I can only change regions a set number of times, then the change becomes permanant for the DVD drive. The good news is that I'm planning on upgrading over the summer, and I'm getting a new DVD drive. Does this mean that if I keep the region on this DVD player that I'll be able to use my new DVD player for region 2? |

| Kas: Yes, you can do that. The # of changes is hardcoded into the firmware. I'm going to look for a way to hardcode mine to region 0... probably either a firmware upgrade/flash or something similar. I'll let you know how it goes. |

| i believe there is firmware out there that converts it DVD firmware from RPC2 to RPC1...you could try that option if you can't manage to get it to Region 0... | |||

| The default Administrator account has a blank password (meaning there is no pass). On the welcome screen, press CTRL+ALT+DELETE twice. You'll see a login prompt similar to Windows 2000. From there, type 'Administrator' in the username field, and leave the password blank. That should let you log in is the admin. |

| Change the region to 0 or I think 8. 0 is universal, 8 is reserved for airplanes and such, either should work. | |||
