Yay!

Mac OS X Tiger is going to be released on April 29!

I have been looking forward to this, as I've been thinking about getting a new Mac, and I've been holding out for this before I finalised my decision.

I am definitely going to be getting Tiger, I made my mind up about that a long time ago. I'm looking forward to features like Spotlight and Dashboard, and I can't wait to get to play with them all

I adore Panther, so I'm hoping that Tiger rocks even more

Yay!

Spotlight is a search tool.... although the word "tool" seems a bit inaccurate, it's more a system that's built into the OS. Here's Apple's Spotlight Page

Dashboard will allow you to put little mini applications called Widgets on your computer, things that tell time, weather, calendars and sticky notes, etc. Apple's Dashboard Page. I used to use Konfabulator, which is similar, although I found it was weird and buggy.... I suspect that Dashboard on the other hand will not be.

Been thinking on getting a Mac mini, maybe it's time to get it.

Honestly, have Longhorn impressed anyone lately? I'm more impressed by the diffrent Linux solutions even. And after talking with some of my friends, it seems like Microsoft is losing it after WinXP.

Microsoft is too focused on things like DRM and excessive eye candy to bother with anything of real value (honestly, why does an OS NEED 3D acceleration?). You can't appeal to huge corporations, the masses, and the power users all at the same time*.

Ask Apple the same thing--since their interface is (1) pleasing to the eye [isn't that definition of eye-candy] and (2) today's Apples come with ATi video cards which have 3D acceleration

A computer having a video card capable of it and an OS that requires it are two very different things. Between DRM and 3D, there's no way that thing's running on this computer. Even if it ever does become capable somehow.

But that would mean that when Apple sells their computer, they need to have that video card there. Otherwise, things aren't going to turn out as planned.

Also, the OS may require the video card but I highly doubt the OS won't function without it

Apple is not the only producer of Mac OS X-capable computers... even though they're the largest. Last I checked, OS X does not require acceleration.

Mac OS X has eye candy but there's a couple things:
1. It's minimal... appealing, yet simple. Windows XP Luna is not appealing, but it is simple. Now, Longhorn doesn't fit in either category.
2. You can change the window manager.

Who else builds MacOSX capable computers? Apple has a complete monopoly on their own stuff. No one else can produce stuff unless Apple lets them. This is why there are no valid Apple clones. I'll stand corrected if you can show me something that runs OSX (or any apple operating system) natively that is independent from Apple.

Just an aside question, since the computer store at Concordia sells a *lot* of Apple items and I'm sure they do a good deal of business... How long does it take for Apple to have the OS updated on their Macs? Could someone walk into an Apple retailer the day of Tiger's release and get it pre-loaded, or would they be given a free upgrade CD, or...

I'm just asking that because I know Apple's pretty up-to-date on these things, so I'm just wondering what the past precedent is.

Well, Darwin (the core operating system behind OS X) is free... so you can get 10.4's core freely, security updates and all. But for the non-free parts (90% of it), you'll need to buy it.

I don't know of any non-Apple retailers, but I know a few friends who have built their own Apple/PowerPC computers and run Mac OS 9 or OS X on them. Instead of having the pretty girlish colours, you get a nice rectangle and grey box; just like a PC!
