| Got into a debate with someone about "right and wrong." I really don't like those terms and only deem serious criminal behavior as wrong. Instead of saying, "I'm right, you're wrong," maybe they should just say, "I disagree." This right and wrong debate was all about whether or not someone should run a red light or drive above the speed limit. Running a red light isn't necessarily wrong. It is often stupid, but I wouldn't compare it to even more reprehensible acts. An ambulance or fire truck with it's sirens wailing is not in the wrong to run a red light. Suppose there were two empty streets, except for one car, and it stopped at a red light. If he wanted to just keep driving, since there were no other cars or people around, should he? I guess I just wonder, where the line should be drawn regarding our morals and ethics. There are so many things that are considered right by some people but wrong to others. Just like what one person might interpret as criticism, another will see it as being questioning of something. |

| what is right and what is wrong is all relative. without wrong, you can't define right and without right, you can't define wrong. the phrase, "i'm right, you're wrong" to me carries more solid direction than "i disagree." i dunno--i think society as a whole resorts to that phrase because we are all brought up learning what is right and wrong, not what is agreeable and disagreeable... anyways, for the red light situation--as long as you are 110% sure no one is going to get harmed for running it, why not? however, it isn't my fault if a cop nails you for doing so... |

| I recalled this from a social class... Right and wrong, is based on yourself and other people. So what you and other people think. Example, There's only one cookie left and you haven't had any, so you think it's ok to just take it, but in a general thing, it is considered rude, unless you were offered it, or you asked everyone else if it was ok. (I think that made sense...  )So with the red light, Most people think it is wrong, but It is up to you. |

| Exactly. Opinions. But the purpose of the law is supposed to take things that the general populace views as 'wrong' and make it law not to do it. I guess... |

| Right and Wrong are completely subjective things. Like everybody said. Opinions, of a sort, but usually influenced by society, or your parents, or laws or such. What gets up MY nose when it comes to "right and wrong" is when people assume that everything legal is "right" or "moral" and everything illegal is also immoral. Let's take, say... marijuana as an example. Now, here it is illegal. Decriminalised, but illegal to possess it, use it, trade it or grow it. Now, because it is illegal, people like... say, my mother (my mother is a good example of this, she sees things VERY black and white) also see pot smoking and such as immoral, or wrong. I take a different view on it. Yes, it is illegal, but I certainly wouldn't say it's "wrong" for anybody to smoke it or such because it's illegal. I'd say that they were running a risk by doing so, but I don't think that there is anything wrong about smoking pot if that is what you want to do. You are not harming anybody else by doing so, are you? Another thing that annoys me with "right and wrong" and laws, is when religious matters come into the mix. Like the whole debate about whether gay couples should be allowed to marry and such. But that's a whole other argument that's been done to death already. |
