about 2:37 EST...Pope left this plane of being we call earth. I don't know a whole lot about him, just that supposedly he was a great guy. Sad to see 'im go. And if theres a thread on this, apologies. I just found out now, and I looked a bit and didn't see a thread before posting.

Sad day. Sad Sad Sad day indeed for a catholic like me. The worst thing is, the protestants here in Ireland are going to love this. Sick Bastards.

Yeah, I'm sure they're loving it just because they want to irritate all the Catholics.

Since Norwegians are mostly Protestants (or not religious at all) , most of the people don't care to much. The 80.000 Catholics here are praying though. As for me, I'm not religious at all, but it's still sad to hear. At least, he was old when he died. It had to happen sometime.

It is a sad day, but as a catholic I'm glad that he is gone. He has been suffering for these past years, even as far back as when he was shot, but he kept working on improving the situation of all. I believe that he is going to heaven, he is the greatest man of this past half century. He knew he was dieing and he was ready to go. And these next 9 days will not be a time of turmoil for the church, it'll be a time to celevrate the glorious life of Pope John Paul II. It will be very interesting to see who is selected as next pope, will it be a third world priest from Latin America or from Africa, or will it be a traditional Italian Pope. Rest in peace and God be with you John Paul II, the greatest man from Poland.

I thought it was quite brave of him to refuse to be hospitalized even though he knew.

Glad he's up in heaven though

I heard about his death a few minutes after it was announced. I was in a chat room and someone mentioned it. For about 10 minutes that was the subject. There was a few bastards that came in to talk smack about him in a desprate plea for attention. Luckily it was yahoo chat so our resident hackers booted them. Yahoo is a hackers haven as most of you who use it would know.

In local time it's 21.37. I live in the same timezone as pope.

Most of the Swedes are protestants (including me...), it still get media attention. So it's not like we ignore it.

not sure why the other thread couldn't just be moved here since that thread came first

this was expected for some time now and now it is here--media interest will be here until the next pope is selected; once that happens, it will subside...

John Paul lived an impressive life--I hope the next pope has the same positive effect that John Paul did

Well isn't that to be expected? He is an incredibly well known figure, afterall. And to be remembered for much, even if you aren't religious, you've got to respect the man for his dedication and iron will.

Indeed, the media will go on about it awhile. But I think it's within reason.

Hey, any more from either side and this thread is going to be trashed and started again. This is not the time to bring up our differences, for hatred or not.

I'm happy for him. He lived a remarkable life and managed to live to a great age. There should be nothing tragic about dieing at such an age, especially for a man of such faith.

We're talking about the popes death. Seriously, I don't even want to go into the whole protestant-catholic things. I have my reasons. Leave it at that.

Sad thing is he was planning to go to Germany =(

Thank you, Gavin. I'm glad at least one person got it right.

Sure, it's sad that he died, but it's not like we don't all know where he is now. We can all take comfort in that fact, at least.

84 years... pretty old.

Personally, Im glad he went, and didnt have to suffer through any more.

For all those who want to know, theres a 9 day mourning period for the pope, so yes, this will be going on for a while.

not to keep this going, but honestly, there can never be a legitimate reason to prejudge people. it's ironic when the religion you follow is the reason you cite when contradicting the very teachings of that religion..

and my personal view on the passing of the pope, as extracted from the now-closed thread in debate:

'while i know i disagree with the instituion and what the pope might stand for in religious regards, he was nonetheless an extremely influential, if subtle, figure who's weilding of clothly clout in the last few decades cannot be denied.

if such a separation is necessary, i'd regard him, all cannonical social issues aside, as i would any other influential figure in history with at least a certain amount of respect, despite some of his rather disgusting stances.'

i recognize his global weight and mourne the loss of a human life. in my mind humanity supercedes religion, but different strokes for different folks.
