OK Trapster....I have no idea what your post has to do with anything in this thread.

This thread is a discussion about the next Pope, and the rumors that surrounds what's going to happen next. If you had perhaps read the entire thread, and or taken the time to look up who Turcotte is, you could have possibly made an insightful and meaningful post.

Anyways, I'm not familiar with how new Pope's are elected, since I dabble very little in religion, but I'd just like to say what a media frenzy this has turned into. 24/7 coverage of the Pope on every channel.

I'll have to remember this for comparison purposes next time another Pope dies.

Just a few points to consider.

First for those who don't understand how the pope is chosen and are interested: go here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conclave. Having gone to Catholic school for 11 years, I can say with atleast some authority that this is a fairly good article.

Secondly, if you think the media frenzy was bad, well.... I was in Rome when the all this happened, you can not even imagine how hard it is to get around Italy right now. Ugh. That is a frenzy.

If you want up to the minute "Pope results", turn to CNN. They had a window in the corner of the screen pointing at the roof of the Sistine.

They decided to do a vote today, everyone was going nuts when they saw the smoke coming out... and it turned black. Massive disappointment, but fun to watch.

I figure we're looking at Wednesday/Thursday... any longer and you'd have to figure they'll go with a compromise candidate.

It sure is odd. That a religious event like this would get so much coverage on mainstream news.

Update: It looks like they elected a new pop. THey are ringing some bells or something and that means they foudn one.

Yeah. They elected Ratzinger (a German from Regensburg). Dammit, he's probably one of the heaviest conservative hardliners the church has. And he used to have an official fan club ;;;

I really thought they were going to elect an Italian.

They release white smoke instead of black when they have selected a new Pope, the beels must of came afterwards.

It's god for him to be a conservative. If a Pope is too liberal, then the catholic religion will eventually lose its way. That won't happen with one Pope, but over the string of years, anything can happen.

I hate being a Catholic.

And in a horrible twist of irony, he chose the name Benedict XVI. The last Benedict was fairly progressive.

This guy's almost 80 already, Ziff. If you want a new pope, then you'll probably get one in... I'll give the guy 4 years at the most. He'll be 82 then.

"If a Pope is too liberal, then the catholic religion will eventually lose its way."

You really don't have to worry about that. Because while there are some liberal archbishops, there are tons of conservative ones that won't go for them. What would be nice if there was a conservative one that ever DID change some things about the church, like letting women have more power. But we know that's not happening this time around.

Yeah. He'll die, not before he does some damage though.

As for you snipy_chipy. There is a difference between liberal and conservative, yes. But in relation with orthodoxy within the Church, there are oodles of Popes that we're seen as liberal, yet were righteous defenders of the orthodoxy of the hierarchy of Rome.

I think he chose Benedict because he's not going to have a long reign.

I don't see a major problem with this. Yes, Ratzinger is conservative, but I can't see him damaging the church too much in his short tenure. It'll basically just be status quo for the next couple of years, as it should be with someone clearly chosen as a transitional pope. If anything, I just hope that he overcomes his shyness and makes a few visits - and isn't it a coincidence that one of his first will be to his native Germany for World Youth Day?

snipy_chipy: The bell thing is new this time around, John Paul II came up with the idea in order to avoid confusion.

I guess one advantage to having such an old pope is that they won't be in office for too long. I think that is what they wanted cause the previous pope had such a long reign. I herad some describe the new pope as a interem pope. A guy to fill the spot for a couple years and then they will select a younger pope the next time around.

Next person that posts that stupid Pope-Emperor Palpatine picture gets banned. I will insure that you get banned.

Next up: geeogree. I think that that and Fatima are going to be discussed during Mass on Sunday. Our parish priest is a fairly strong believer in miracles.

So Trapster was betting on the field instead of Ratzinger? Ow.

Cardinal Ouellet of Quebec City is being tipped to go to the Vatican as one of the new pontiff's secretaries. He's possible pope material someday... although he's conservative and is against same-sex marriage among other things, he's also led the fight to keep Catholic and Protestant school boards alive in Quebec, so I'd probably have a love/hate relationship with him.
