I'm pretty paranoid when it comes to installing software. I never install anything that includes spyware, and I use Firefox, so I don't bother using anti-spyware tools. I do have a copy of Ad-Aware installed, though, just in case. I don't trust "window washer"-type programs, and never will. The first (and only) time I used a "highly recommended" registry cleaner, it wiped out a bunch of "bad" keys that Photoshop and some other programs needed to operate. So, I prefer to do things myself via RegEdit and good ol' Notepad. The stuff I use to keep everything running smoothly: - ScanDisk - Defrag - F-Prot Antivirus - Backup hard drive - Router (hardware firewall) - Can of compressed air (dust can cause more problems than you think) - Good quality surge protector/noise filter |

It's usually enough to castrate IE and then use a alternate browser such as Firefox. Anti-virus and anti-spyware never hurt thought. I castrate IE by simple turning it's abilities to use Active-x and javascript off. It get's useless but I never use it anyway. |

I just change IE's settings to highest security and not to accept cookies. It is particulary annoying when I want to use Windows update. I use just use Adaware SE and Sophos Anti Virus. I cant remember the last time I had any spyware, or virus problems. (edited by mrmenz on 04-01-05 12:23 PM) |

Absolutely nothing, at least on my Mac anyways. Not buying into Norton's scaremongering. On my PC, I run AVG, as it is good and free, and Ad-Aware. I use Firefox partly as I prefer it and partly as it protects my machine from the actions of the others that use it. My other half doesn't do anything stupid with my machine, but my little brother has only just learned that he can look stuff up on the internet (he's 22 btw, and old enough to look up dodgy things). If the machine were left soley up to me, I doubt I would need AdAware, but I'd still use AVG and Firefox. (just as I view antivirus as a necessary evil on Windows) And while this is seperate from my machines themselves, all machines on my network are behind linux based firewalling. No firewall software is installed to any of the machines themselves. (edited by Tarale on 04-01-05 12:46 PM) |

Nice choice, XK. That book has a holywood like ending, but until that, it is really a good read - if you have nothing against Brown's writing style. But I doubt that only the knowledge of TRNSLATR's story will prevent viruses to haunt a non-protected machine |
