If December wasn't bad enough... Sound like it's being described as an aftershock. |

USGS just updated the 8.2 quake to an 8.7. Apparently, they just updated this. I'm watching the stuff on MSNBC now. Also, I read this:

i think this is expected--i saw an earthquake special for my region last night (SF Bay Area) and it said back in the 1700's or 1800's having magnitude 7+ was common As a result, I'm curious about the earthquake history of the area and wonder whether all this activity has been long overdue...

It's not sounding like this one is as devestating as the one in December, it's just that it's magnitude is quite high. There isn't too many negative reports but there are a few dozen known dead as of now. (edited by Yomiko on 03-28-05 02:59 PM) |

2 quakes of that magnitude in the span of about 4 months... I wouldnt be suprised if we begin seeing some new islands in the next couple of years. Obviously something underground is going on a rampage

Well let's see...the day after Christmas they get a 9.3 over there and the day after Easter they get an 8.7. That's pretty ironic coincidence.

Well, people are saying that a few hundred have died in this latest one. A small island near the epicentre was practically demolished

They've confirmed upwards of 300 dead now. They're predicting upwards of 2000. Considering the toll of the last one, it's not as bad, but 2000 gone isn't something to brag about either. |

Yeah, let's hope that the tectonic stress that is in the region has subdued...one good thing is no tsunami too--so, it must have been very deep in the ground

Well, if these are indicators to some sort of new trend...Uh-oh. If that region of the world starts getting pummled constantly. Eeeek What's more, generally these quakes are followed by ones in Central China and Japan. So, that could be a far bigger problem. Now, if this lets out lots of tectonic stress Then that region won't be so hard hit for a while. |

It is an odd coincidence that it keeps happening after Christian holidays. Hmm, the water level rose higher than in December too.... |

Well, if that was the pattern then they have PLENTY of time to prevent anything from happening in 9 months time. :\ People dead due to the earthquake isn't fun at all, but thankfully it looks like no tsunami will result from this - I figured the odds of two in three months were a little too high. |

Gotta feel bad for the people in this part of the world tho. The first tsunami was bad enough. Hell, if I was over there I'd be running for higher ground too.

Read in the paper today that there are two theories about the tsunami. 1) the plates slid past each other, means not much water displacement and thus no tsunami (the other earthquake was subduction and equals a LOT of displaced water) 2) a tsunami did occur, but it headed for Antartica Reports say at least 1000 dead so it's bad but not as bad as earthquakes happening in areas where clay is the choice of material... |

No kidding. Who has a grudge against them? Poor guys didn't do anything to deserve that. Hell, it's bad enough that the red cross didn't do all they could (When my high school went to donate several hundred dollars cdn., red cross said they had already reched their quota for disaster relief). What next? If something were to set of the "ring of fire", there would be one helluva mess around the pacific, especially on vancouver island and coastal states (I live on vancouver island). |
