It would be a good lesson for any newbie who actually downloads it and checks it out, the only problem is getting them to do it.

I'm going to say yes, but with one specification: you need to tell the people playing the hack what's wrong with a given area, just in case it's not very obvious or something. I've played a couple purposefully glitched hacks that could've been made for the purpose of showing people what not to do in their games, but didn't explain what was wrong with it. Of course, the problem with that is how you would tell the player things about certain areas in the game. Message Boxes would work alright, provided you didn't have too much to tell the player, but if you did, the only other way I can think to go is to write the stuff down in a .txt file, divided up into level-specific sections Either way, my answer is 'Yes'. |

Also if you have alot to say, you could draw words in the backrounds if the text boxes arent enough.

You should put GFX from various games in it and leave it unlocked.

Case and point SMW Minus buddy . Although I didn't make SMW- to tell newbies what not to do, just to, well, mock them . So I'd say knock yourself out if this is something you really want to do. |

I'd say do it. There are many people who might make mistakes that are frowned upon here simply because they don't know that those are wrong. You have a great idea, ||Bass.

Or you could use examples of the 1,000s of SMW hacks that already do what you shouldn't do

That is exactly what you want, isn't it? I say yes. If this stops some newbies from copying the same stupid errors, then it sure would help. Note that I said some, as not everyone will play this. |

Yes, go for it. Even though I don't hack, I MAY learn a few things from it. It might be enough to encourage me to at least make a small hack. ...what? Of course I'm going to make mistakes in my hack, so I may as well start somewhere! |

I thought of this a while ago. You could call it "How not to make an SMW hack" (or rather: "H0W N0T T0 M4K3 4N 5MW H4X" ) Might be good to have all the levels open too.

Super Edit'd Hacky Woldz! That's what it should be! Because one mistake that throws at least me off is referring to your game as "hack" IN the game...... It makes one not feel like Mario anymore...... Or it could be just me. I'm sensitive, after all. I almost made a game based on what not to do...... and every castle defeated sequence said, "but he didn't really. It's just a hack". Funny stuff..... but someone told me it was a bad idea, so..... meh. (edited by Master M on 03-26-05 03:44 AM) |

Yea, this is kind of a bump but whatever. I'm back from Italy, so I'm going to start work on this what-not-to-do hack. Any suggestions on mistakes people make, please put here so I can include them.

Make sure to have lots of invisible holes in the ground and use bad pallete choices.

Here's what I plan to do. Each level, I'm going to make one major and one minor mistake. Upon encountering each mistake, I'm going to put message blocks explaining what's wrong and why you shouldnt do that. So now, anyone who wants to include suggestions of major and minor problems. I have a few in mind but I'm sure theres plenty I haven't thought of. |

Lessee here... I'm not sure which mistakes could be considered minor, and which major, but here we go: -Incorrect palette -Message box in level with Layer 3 -Too many sprites/lots of "Process on every screen" sprites -Unedited levels -Invisible blocks -Areas with too many damn coins -Repetitive level design -Stuff stolen from other hacks -Areas with lots of exits that all lead to the same place -Incorrect graphics usage (Ala the thwimps in Super Strange World) Heh, remembering the thwimps makes me realize how strange it is that I don't like any of Acmlm's hacks, yet I'm... y'know, here. |

- Non-fitting graphics (i.e. inserting the SMW cement blocks (which have transparent edges) amidst a ledge) - Random pallette changes - Empty message box - Level names not changed (whilst the levels themselves contain something entirely different, i.e. a castle called DONUT PLAINS 1) - Inserting new sprite graphics, but not covering both walking animation frames (like orynider's famous monty mole replacements who changed into an entirely different sprite every other frame) - Overusage of SMAS graphics - changing the title screel level, but not modifying the movement data - making Mario die in the title level movement animation - bad usage of music (like the Bowser battle theme in one of the first levels of Rob-omb's quest *dislikes*) |

-Changing Mario into something stupid like a pirannah plant -Changing gfx into really crappy stuff -Putting a powerup in every other block -Using Demo World to base your hack off of and leaving the graphics the same |

Some of the boxes may be hard to read but theres nothing I can do. I have alot to say so, expect the message boxes to have no word wrapping and nice spacing, I need to use every ounce of space I can give myself so it may end up looking a bit sloppy. Then again, that's ok isn't it.... |

That seems like it'd be okay. I recommend heavy overuse of things from the ExGFX workshop, assembled in such a way that the styles of it clash horribly with the styles of everything else around it. |
