Thought this would go here since this is the "Programming" forum. Do you listen to music? Take breaks in between? Talk to others for resources or what? Just interested what people do while coding. |

I listen to music while coding. If I'm programming with others, I talk--but that leads to digression from programming fairly easily. I really dont' take breaks and I usually stop when I've run into a roadblock in programming--a problem that I've spent too long not making progress

Usually, I code at school, because I'm never motivated enough to do anything that isn't for school or work. I can usually handle interruptions, but if I have to concentrate on a particularly difficult piece of code, or want to finish the program in the last five minutes of class rather than leave it 99.9999999999999% done, I need to be left alone.

Once I get into the "zone" I tend to write a lot of code, but it's hard to switch into and out of it. Usually I just work somewhere comfy and quiet, so I can focus entirely on mapping and working the code in my mind. If I have enough energy and start focusing, it just happens and I start writing code. It takes a few hours to get out though, and during that time I keep thinking in programming terms. It can make for some pretty strange dreams. |

I listen to my PSF/GSF/USF/SPC/MP3/OGG/GYM collection. I usually have some favorites to listen to, (made that into my "playing Starcraft/Diablo II" list). Usually everything goes well until something stops working... And then things start randomly exploding. Some songs work better than others, I find that "Dark Messenger" (FF9) and a bunch of SO3 tracks get me into a thinking mood. What happens after that is anybody's guess. Quiet, something to eat, and no distractions. Maybe some music, but I have to be in the mood for it. And lots of time. I work best if I'm alone too, having people around just leads to me being distracted. |

Listening to music, and doing what I feel like. I might work on the GUI one day, some other part the next, etc depening what I'm in the mood for - and that's if I'm in the mood for programming at all. I also tend to just leave the stuff that's really giving me trouble, in the hopes that a solution will arise or I'll be able to figure it out next time.

Silence is good for me, as well. When it comes to programming, I need all of my concentration to figure out how to solve the puzzles. Also a decent monitor, a clean functioning system and a good keyboard and mouse. I bought a new laptop recently so I would only ever need to code on one platform. Nobody to share with, my own environment to code in, I can use it whereever I like I can even code on the train. If I sit in first class, I can even surf the internet |
