I had a microsoft interview a few months ago and they asked me a question that I had trouble on. Then recently, I saw my friend had a book that talk about questions the microsoft gives to prospective people when they are looking to hire. So, I wonder if you applied to work with Microsoft (or any place that tries to mess with your head when you were being interviewed), could you get their question. Anyways, here is the first question: Suppose you have 10 jars, filled to the brim with identical looking marbles. In 9 of the jars, the marbles weigh 1g. In the other jar, the marbles weigh 1.1g. Using only one weighing of the digital scale, can you figure out which jar has the 1.1g marbles? Note, "by one weighing of the digital scale" means the moment you get a reading from it. So, you can't do accumulation I hope this isn't in the other thread... (edited by neotransotaku on 03-23-05 12:23 PM) |

If you consider that the jar dosen't weight anything at all all jars that, then whenever the digital scale shows decimals the jar contains the 1.1 g marbles. And when there is no decimals, it obviously contains the 1 g marbles. That one was so easy. edit: Althought this assumes that it dosen't contain 10, 100, 1000 or anything 10^x marbles. um...you're not there yet. Your reasoning works provided your assumption is true and you can weigh each jar. However, if you weigh each jar, you may need 9 weighings to find the jar. I'm looking for the solution that takes 1 and only 1 weighing without signficant assumptions and it is 100% correct. (edited by neotransotaku on 03-23-05 08:50 PM) |

Weigh 1 marble from the first jar, 2 marbles from the second jar, et cetera all the way through 10 marbles from the tenth jar. If the reading's decimal is .1, the heavy marbles are in the first jar, if it's .2, the second jar, et cetera all the way through .0 for the tenth jar.

yup, that's it...i wish I didn't have that much trouble when I got that question NSNick - 1 point Next question: How many ways can you go south 1 mile, east 1 mile, north 1 mile and still end up in the same place? (edited by neotransotaku on 03-24-05 12:05 AM) |

Well, I think it is phrased wrong, you can literally go billions of ways from the north pole and end up in the same place, but for the sake of arguments, is it one?

There are an infinite amount of points you can do that. Just be north one mile of the latitude where the circumference of the Earth is exactly one mile. Edit: And of course, you can also do so from the North Pole (but not the South, since you cannot go south from the South Pole). (edited by NSNick on 03-24-05 07:07 PM) |

NSNick is right. It's infinite. If you start from the north pole, the only direction you can go is south. Thus, when you start going east, you are going on a latitude--meaning you are not going any further away from the pole nor getting closer. Thus, when you start walking north again, you head back to the same point. NSNick - 2 points Alright, how about something less number theory eh? When you go to a hotel, when you want hot water from a bathroom faucet, you have it. But when you are at home, it takes time. How is a hotel able to provide hot water on demand? Originally posted by Jagori I should specify. Be one mile north of the latitude in the Southern Hemisphere where the circumference of the Earth is exactly one mile. It might work in the Northern Hemisphere, but I'm not sure if that latitude is more than one mile south of the North Pole. (edited by NSNick on 03-25-05 05:45 AM) |

Originally posted by neotransotaku There are several ways a hotels can provide hot water quickly. One is to install a hot water loop, with a pump to circulate water back into the heater, that runs near each sink, keeping hot water avalable at all times. Another is to install small water heaters near each sink or cluster of sinks in adjacent suites. |

Originally posted by Emptyeye The question says from the bathroom faucet, so your answer wouldnt work. Cellar Dweller's answers are correct, a family member runs a hotel and they have a small water heater in every bathroom. At my work they have those hot water loops and that keeps hot water coming out any time. I guess I should have an answer too. They have propane water heaters instead of electric. BTW, I have hot water at my house on demand, I dont have to wait for it.... |
